A New History of India: From Its Origins to the Twenty-First Century is an illustrated, wide-ranging survey aimed at readers beyond academia. In his April 9, 2023 review for Scroll.in, Nandan Kaushik praises its accessible writing and visual appeal but argues that its regional balance and claim to newness are less convincing. The book is co-authored by historian Rudrangshu Mukherjee, ancient historian Shobita Punja, and photographer-archivist Toby Sinclair.
What is A New History of India?
The book, titled A New History of India: From Its Origins to the Twenty-First Century, attempts a broad account of the subcontinent’s past, moving from geological processes and early state formation through the rise and fall of states, colonial rule, and contemporary politics. It is co-authored by modern historian Rudrangshu Mukherjee, ancient historian Shobita Punja, and photographer-archivist Toby Sinclair. A distributor catalog identifies it by ISBN 9789391047511.
Its structure favors short chapters, images, and information boxes rather than an academic apparatus of citations and footnotes. Kaushik sees that design as evidence of an intended audience of curious, informed readers outside the academy.
What does the book do well?
Accessible prose and brisk chapters
Kaushik describes the writing as lucid, with uncomplicated vocabulary in the early chapters and a light, informative manner. The concise chapters make a long chronological sweep easier to approach for readers who want an introduction rather than a specialist monograph.

Photographs and visual context
The images are among the book’s strengths in Kaushik’s assessment. The review also credits the volume with giving more room to South Indian history than some comparable broad accounts, particularly in its earlier chapters. That positive note sits alongside, rather than cancels out, the reviewer’s broader concern about regional imbalance.
Why does the reviewer question its regional balance?
Kaushik’s main criticism is that the account remains dominated by North India. He argues that the chapter on the North-East first raises questions about the category itself, then goes on to frame the region as “other.” He also finds that the final quarter tightens into a political narrative centered on Bengal and the freedom movement.

- A New History of India: From Its Origins to the Twenty-First Century
These are the reviewer’s readings of the book, not a consensus verdict established by multiple assessments. They point to a useful question for anyone considering a single-volume history of India: does a broad chronological sweep also represent the many regional histories within its frame in a balanced way?
What is “new” about this history of India?
Kaushik questions the title’s claim to newness. In his view, the bibliography draws on secondary sources, and the book’s more distinctive contributions lie in its analysis and photographs rather than a wholly new account built from original research. He acknowledges those contributions while asking how far the synthesis itself changes a reader’s understanding.

That endpoint is India Today’s characterization; it is not a precise cutoff supplied by Kaushik’s Scroll.in review.

The book may suit readers who want a visually engaging, accessible route through a broad span of Indian history and are comfortable treating it as an introductory synthesis. Readers looking for sustained coverage of every region, a detailed academic citation trail, or a uniformly balanced political narrative may find Kaushik’s reservations important to weigh.
In the closing assessment of his April 9, 2023 review, Kaushik writes: “Conceived with good intention, it succeeds occasionally, but appears to not to take account of the multiple histories within this claimed area of ‘India’.”
