In his 3/5-star review for Tom’s Guide, published January 19, 2026, Malcolm McMillan calls the premiere sluggish but says its late lift and brief runtime make it worth continuing for fans of Westeros lore.
What is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms about?
The series adapts George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. Its first episode is titled “The Hedge Knight,” according to HBO’s episode synopsis. The story follows Ser Duncan the Tall—Dunk—and his young squire Egg, set about a century before Game of Thrones, according to the Prime Video listing.
HBO’s pressroom announcement describes a six-episode first season, debuting January 18, 2026, at 10 p.m. ET. The release page’s details are available here: HBO’s announcement.
Why does the premiere feel slow?
McMillan’s criticism is chiefly about expectations. This is not an opener built around the “shock and awe” associated with Game of Thrones. The premiere takes time with Dunk and Egg and the relationship between them rather than immediately opening out into a sweeping political contest. For a viewer expecting the scale, intrigue and high stakes of the flagship series, that measured approach can feel sluggish.

Tom’s Guide’s displayed verdict similarly describes the show as a departure from Game of Thrones’ “shock and awe,” while pointing to the production value and roughly 30-minute runtime as reasons the premiere may still be worth a try. That is the publication’s assessment of this episode, not a measure of audience consensus.
Does the episode pick up?
McMillan says it does, particularly toward the end when Lyonel Baratheon appears. The shift gives the premiere a more lively stretch after its slower opening, though it does not turn the series into an immediate spectacle-driven story. The central draw remains the evolving dynamic between Dunk and Egg.

How is it different from Game of Thrones?
| Aspect | A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms | Game of Thrones |
|---|---|---|
| Scale and stakes | A more localized story, with a tournament providing a central setting and focus. | A broader political conflict, as characterized in McMillan’s review. |
| Tone | Earthier comedy and a character-led focus on Dunk and Egg, in McMillan’s account. | More associated with shock, spectacle and sweeping intrigue in the review’s comparison. |
| Episode commitment | About 30 minutes for the premiere; season one has six episodes, according to the cited review and HBO pressroom information. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
| Prior familiarity | Westeros lore may add appeal, but the premise is centered on a distinct pair of characters. | Not stated in the cited sources. |
Is the premiere boring?
That depends on what you want from the franchise. If you are looking for immediate spectacle or fast-moving political intrigue, the slow start may frustrate you. If you are open to a smaller story and want to spend time with two central characters, McMillan’s review suggests the episode improves as it goes and asks for relatively little viewing time. He rates the premiere 3/5 stars; that score is his review judgment, not an overall series rating.
Should you keep watching?
For viewers who enjoy Westeros lore, the case for continuing is cautious rather than emphatic: the premiere is short, its late section gains momentum, and its focus on Dunk and Egg offers a different kind of entry into the setting. Viewers who need the scale and high-stakes momentum of Game of Thrones from the outset may be less persuaded. Read Malcolm McMillan’s full Tom’s Guide review for his complete assessment.
