ပုံပြင်များ: Where to Find Burmese Folk Tales and Traditional Stories

ပုံပြင်များ means "stories" or "tales." Here is how to tell traditional Myanmar, community-specific and translated Burmese story collections apart, using library records.

The Burmese phrase ပုံပြင်များ means “stories” or “tales.” It does not name one book. To find Burmese-language folk tales, search for a specific collection title, then check three things before you borrow or buy: whose tradition the stories come from, what language the text is in, and whether the book retells local material or translates stories from another culture.

Why the title alone is not enough

The word is generic, so the same title appears on books from very different sources. National Library Myanmar catalog records show at least three kinds of collection that all sit under the idea of “stories”: a traditional Myanmar collection, a collection tied to a specific Chin community, and Burmese-language books that present stories from other traditions. Treating them as one “Burmese folklore” body would hide those differences.

Four catalogued collections, four different sources

The table below uses the library record for each title. Where a record does not give a value, the cell says so.

Title (with English gloss) Source tradition Author or compiler Date Format and length Catalog record
မြန်မာ့ရိုးရာပုံပြင်များ (Traditional Myanmar stories) Traditional Myanmar material ဝင်းရွှေနောင် (National Library record, Nay Pyi Taw) 2013, published by မြိတ်စာပေ, Yangon Myanmar language; 130 pages with illustrations; placed in the Children’s Area; DDC 398.2 National Library Myanmar (Nay Pyi Taw) record

How to classify what you find

Traditional Myanmar collections

The 2013 traditional Myanmar collection is catalogued as a children’s illustrated book. Its record places stories under the heading of Myanmar tradition, which is the closest match to what most readers mean by Burmese folk tales. Even so, the record describes one collection, not the whole range of Myanmar traditions.

Community-specific collections

The Chin collection is tied to one community and is recorded as a PDF resource rather than a printed book. Titles like this show that “Burmese” stories can come from ethnic communities within Myanmar, each with its own tradition and sometimes its own language. Check the community named in the title before assuming it represents the majority tradition.

Translated or retold collections

The Thai collection and the Asian stories volume show that Burmese-language books also carry stories from other places. A book written in Burmese is not automatically a Burmese story. For the Asian volume, the record makes the translation relationship explicit, which is the detail to look for in any similar listing.

Checking a record before you rely on it

  1. Search the exact Burmese title in the National Library Myanmar catalogs at eresource.nlm.gov.mm or catalogue.nlmnpt.gov.mm. Results are shown by individual record, so a generic search for ပုံပြင်များ will return many unrelated titles.
  2. Read the subject and classification fields. The 1993 Thai record lists ပုံပြင် as its subject, and the 2013 Myanmar record uses DDC 398.2, the Dewey class used for folklore collections.
  3. Confirm the language of the text and whether the record describes the stories as a translation.
  4. Check the date. A 1965 or 1986 edition may use older spelling or formatting, and the record date is not always the date of the original story.
  5. For children’s books, check the stated location and any illustration note, because the record’s placement often signals the intended reader.

Learning Passport Myanmar

Learning Passport Myanmar, at mm.learningpassport.org, displays story collections associated with several communities and languages: Wa, Tapong Chin, Hualngo Chin, Hakha Chin, Inn Thar, Anu, Akha, and Uppu Chin. It is a practical option for children and multilingual learners who want to compare traditions side by side. Access requirements and the available content can change, so confirm them on the platform before you plan around a specific story.

Buying or borrowing a copy

Match any purchase to the four points above: tradition, language, edition, and audience. Current retail availability for these titles was not verified, so search by the exact Burmese title, the publisher, and the year. Libraries and catalog records are the more reliable way to confirm that a given edition exists.

The Bottom Line

Start from a specific collection title rather than the generic word ပုံပြင်များ. Burmese-language stories come from Myanmar traditions, from particular communities, or from other cultures, and the catalog record usually tells you which one you have.
