The figure who earns that description is Samson, the Alpha infected played by Chi Lewis-Parry in Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later. Calling him the “most terrifying zombie” is a matter of judgment, not a verified audience ranking—but Samson’s size, strength and place in the film’s late development make the case. The film’s own preferred term is “infected,” not “zombie.”
Who is the Alpha infected Samson in 28 Years Later?
Samson is the film’s main Alpha, according to Boyle, and he is played by Chi Lewis-Parry. The distinction matters: an Alpha is described as bigger and stronger than other infected, making Samson a more physically imposing threat than the ordinary infected the characters face. The available reporting does not quantify that difference or establish a formal ranking of every infected.

That is enough to make Samson stand out without pretending there is an objective measure of terror. “Most terrifying” is a critical judgment: the film gives its Alpha a distinctive role and physical presence, but no source establishes that viewers universally fear him more than every other horror character.
Why the film calls them infected, not zombies
“Zombie” is the familiar genre label, but Boyle has emphasized that the people in 28 Years Later are alive rather than undead. As TIME reports, Boyle said the filmmakers wanted the infected to behave differently physically, but that they “weren’t undead. They could die and they will die.” Their danger comes from infection and violent behavior—not supernatural immortality.

- Decades after the rage virus outbreak, survivors live in isolation. When one leaves his ruthlessly quarantined island sanctuary, he uncovers haunting secrets and mutations in both the infected and the remaining humans. From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.
That distinction also clarifies what makes Samson frightening: he is a living infected person, not a monster who cannot be killed. Boyle’s reported warning is that the infected can die, but a person they catch can die too.
28 Years Later’s late development (spoilers)
TIME’s ending account places Samson at the center of a startling late development: he appears after a pregnant infected gives birth. That moment connects the Alpha to one of the film’s most unsettling turns and makes his arrival more than a simple showcase of physical strength.

- Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
Where the film sits in the franchise
28 Years Later is directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. Sony describes 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple as a direct sequel to the 2025 film; that establishes the next installment’s relationship to it, but does not by itself establish plot details about Samson or the original film’s ending.
The franchise’s earlier reach is a separate point of context, not evidence about Samson’s reception. TIME reported that the 2002 film 28 Days Later earned more than $80 million worldwide against a reported $8 million budget. TIME also reported that the 28 Years Later trailer ranked second in first-24-hour views among horror-movie trailers, behind It Chapter Two; the cited account did not give an exact view count. Neither figure measures how frightening audiences find Samson.
