28 Years Later: The Bone Temple makes a strong case for itself as one of 2026’s most ambitious horror releases. Nia DaCosta shifts the franchise’s emphasis from infected-driven survival toward the cruelty, belief and compassion people build around catastrophe. The result is a deliberately unruly mix of gore, dark comedy and spiritual inquiry—one that has impressed some critics while leaving room for the sense that its ideas could have gone further.

What is The Bone Temple about?

The fourth film in the 28 Days Later franchise and the second installment in a new trilogy, The Bone Temple continues directly after 2025’s 28 Years Later. Alex Garland wrote the screenplay, Nia DaCosta directs, and Danny Boyle returns as a producer. Sony’s synopsis sets up two interlocking threats: Dr. Kelson makes a discovery with potentially world-changing consequences, while Spike’s encounter with Jimmy Crystal turns into a nightmare. The studio frames the infected and the inhumanity of survivors as dangers in their own right; the story’s emphasis is not confined to infection mechanics.

Ralph Fiennes plays Dr. Kelson, Alfie Williams plays Spike and Jack O’Connell plays Jimmy Crystal. Erin Kellyman and Chi Lewis-Parry are also among the principal cast named by Sony.

Does the sequel set a high bar for horror in 2026?

It makes a persuasive case, particularly if horror is allowed to mean more than an escalating sequence of attacks. Sony’s promotional material describes a story concerned with belief, cruelty, empathy and compassion, and reviews by the Associated Press and The Atlantic likewise emphasize the shift toward human behavior and spirituality. That turn gives the sequel a different kind of dread: infected bodies remain part of the danger, but the beliefs and social rules survivors make for themselves become another source of menace.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple - Blu-ray + Digital
  • Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.

The film’s tonal mixture is central to whether that approach works. Mark Kennedy’s Associated Press review praised DaCosta’s direction and the collision of disturbing violence with comedy, calling the film “absolutely bonkers — and a triumph.” David Sims of The Atlantic described it as “gnarly, challenging, and an incredibly impressive swerve.” Those reactions point to a sequel that takes risks rather than simply repeating the earlier film’s approach.

Not every response is unqualified. Stephanie Zacharek’s TIME review called it “part satisfying triumph, part missed opportunity.” That reservation is useful context for the film’s ambitions: a sharp change in tone and subject can feel invigorating while also making the gap between an intriguing idea and its full development more noticeable. The published reviews offer a range of judgments, not a measured consensus.

28 Years Later - Blu-ray + Digital
  • Decades after the rage virus outbreak, survivors live in isolation. When one leaves his ruthlessly quarantined island sanctuary, he uncovers haunting secrets and mutations in both the infected and the remaining humans. From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.

How does it compare with 28 Years Later?

The clearest point of comparison is the sequel’s change in emphasis. Rather than treating the franchise’s infected as its only meaningful engine of horror, The Bone Temple turns more attention to human cruelty, belief and the possibility of compassion. The shift is both a continuation of the previous film’s world and a tonal swerve within it.

For viewers deciding whether that change suits them, the key questions are whether the violence and humor coexist effectively, whether the human antagonists deepen the story, and whether its focus on belief and compassion feels like a worthwhile direction for the franchise. The AP’s praise for the tonal combination and The Atlantic’s emphasis on spirituality support the case for the swerve; TIME’s mixed verdict cautions that ambition does not guarantee every opportunity is fully realized.

Is The Bone Temple worth watching?

If you want a conventional infected-survival sequel, this one’s pronounced interest in human behavior and its mixture of gore and comedy may be a departure. If you welcome horror that changes register and uses its post-apocalyptic setting to explore cruelty, belief and compassion, the published critical response gives you a strong reason to consider it. Kennedy’s Associated Press review awarded it 3.5 stars out of 4; Zacharek’s divided assessment is a reminder that the same tonal and thematic risks will not work equally well for everyone.
