Ángela Aguilar’s Selena Quintanilla tribute is Baila Esta Cumbia, a seven-track release dated January 31, 2020. Its lead cover, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” came out earlier, on November 29, 2019. Aguilar said she wanted the project to honor Selena and women who helped open doors for younger performers.
When did Ángela Aguilar release the Selena tribute?
The project unfolded in two stages. Milenio reported on November 29, 2019, that Aguilar had released her cover of “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” Apple Music dates the complete Baila Esta Cumbia release to January 31, 2020, and credits ℗ 2020 to Machin Records. The single date and the full release date are therefore not the same.

People en Español described the project in November 2019 as Aguilar’s third production and reported that it was dedicated to Selena. Early-2020 coverage also presented it as a tribute EP.
Why did Aguilar dedicate the release to Selena?
Aguilar framed the tribute both as an expression of admiration for Selena and as recognition of women who made opportunities for younger performers possible. People en Español quoted her describing women who opened doors for girls like her to sing and stand onstage on equal terms with men.

El Universal printed Aguilar’s explanation: “Este EP lo presento como homenaje y en agradecimiento a Selena. Con admiración a una mujer Mexico/Americana que expresaba su amor por la música y em escenario a través de bailes y canciones junto a su familia”. The wording “em escenario” is reproduced as it appears in that publication.
