Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red” won triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2023, with the countdown announced on 27 January 2024. Troye Sivan’s “Rush” placed eighth. Fans reacted strongly, and PerthNow reported that many said Sivan had been snubbed. The official chart records where songs finished. It does not show whether that fan reaction was widely shared, so the placements and the “robbed” claim need to be read separately.
Where the songs finished
The official triple j chart is the authoritative record of the result. It lists the placements below for the 2023 countdown.

| Position | Song | Artist | What it means for this story |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | “Paint The Town Red” | Doja Cat | Winner of the 2023 countdown |
| 8 | “Rush” | Troye Sivan | Sivan’s highest-placed entry in this countdown |
| 31 | “One Of Your Girls” | Troye Sivan | Sivan’s second entry in the countdown |
The full ranking is on the official 1–100 chart. The table compares positions only. The chart gives no margin between songs, so a gap of several places should not be read as a gap in votes.
What “2023” means here
The countdown is named for the year its songs are chosen from, not the year it was broadcast. The 2023 Hottest 100 was announced on 27 January 2024, and readers searching for the “top song of 2023” are looking at that January 2024 result.

ABC reported that Doja Cat became the first female rapper and the first woman of colour to win the countdown as a solo artist. That is a historical claim made by ABC and triple j, and it is attributed to their coverage in the triple j feature on the winner. The ABC News recap of the top 10 covers the rest of the leading placements.
Why some fans said Sivan was “robbed”
The headline’s wording, that fans claim WA’s Troye Sivan was robbed, reflects reported opinion. PerthNow described the result as an outrage to fans and said they claimed Sivan had been snubbed. That is a report of what some fans said. It does not establish how many people share the view, and it does not measure public sentiment.
Two things can be true at once. Sivan placed eighth, a strong result in a countdown of this size, and some listeners wanted “Rush” higher. The complaint is about the ranking, and the chart confirms the ranking. It does not confirm that the ranking was unfair.
The complaint also needs its context. Sivan’s second entry, “One Of Your Girls”, placed 31st, so he had two songs in the countdown. “Robbed” is a fan’s judgement about a specific song’s place. PerthNow’s report, the only coverage of the reaction used here, does not say which songs or voting patterns prompted the claim.

triple j says “Paint The Town Red” samples a loop from “Walk On By”, a song composed by Burt Bacharach for Dionne Warwick in 1963. Sampling an older record is one reason the winning track is notable beyond its chart position, and the triple j feature gives the details of the sample.
What Doja Cat said about the song
triple j’s Courtney Fry quotes Doja Cat describing her first reaction to the track. She told Apple Music in December, according to triple j’s account:
“I thought ‘Paint The Town Red’ reminded me of like, Target or like Macy’s. It reminded me of like, GAP.”
The quote is Doja Cat’s own words, relayed through the Apple Music interview and then reported by triple j. The Apple Music interview itself is the original source for the remark.

- The placements are the fact: Doja Cat first, Troye Sivan eighth and 31st.
- The chart gives no vote totals, vote margins or breakdown by state, so it cannot show how close the top placings were or where support was strongest.
- The “robbed” framing is a fan reaction reported by PerthNow. It is not a finding about the countdown’s accuracy.
- The historical claims about Doja Cat as the first female rapper and first woman of colour to win solo are ABC and triple j’s reporting.
For the chart itself, the broadcaster’s own ranking remains the reference point. Any claim about the size of fan support for Sivan needs data that the published coverage does not provide.
