Extraction 2 is the 2023 Netflix action sequel in which Chris Hemsworth returns as mercenary Tyler Rake, sent on a mission to rescue the imprisoned family of a Georgian gangster. Its best-known feature is a 21-minute action sequence that Netflix describes as designed to look like a single unbroken shot. Below is what the film is about, who makes it, how the action is built, how it relates to the first Extraction, and where to watch it.
What is Extraction 2 about?
The film picks up with Tyler Rake, the hired extractor the first film left badly damaged after a near-fatal mission. Netflix’s official description has him returning to work on a rescue: he is tasked with getting a gangster’s family out of a prison in Georgia. The premise is a straightforward rescue mission, and the story is built around the physical and emotional cost of that job for Rake. Netflix’s Netflix Media Center listing for the film gives the official premise.

Who stars in Extraction 2?
Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake, the lead role he carries through both films. Golshifteh Farahani and Adam Bessa reprise their roles from the first film. Tornike Gogrichiani is also among the stars Netflix lists. The official material does not frame these supporting actors as new arrivals, so the film works best if you have seen the original, which establishes the characters and the world the sequel draws on.
Does Extraction 2 have a one-shot action scene?
Yes. Netflix describes a 21-minute action sequence that is designed to appear as one unbroken shot. That is the film’s signature piece of filmmaking, and it is the element most often discussed in promotional material. Netflix’s behind-the-scenes feature on the fight sequence, in the Netflix Tudum fight sequence breakdown, explains how the sequence was constructed.
Director Sam Hargrave explains the choice in his own words:

“It didn’t really feel like an Extraction movie without a ‘oner’ in it.”

How the sequel builds on Tyler Rake
Where the first film is mostly a survival thriller about one job, the sequel spends more time on the man doing it. Hargrave told Netflix that the aim was to go deeper into who Tyler Rake is and what drives him. In his words:

“The goal was to dive deeper into the backstory of Tyler Rake and find out what makes him tick.”
That emphasis on backstory is the most distinctive change Netflix’s official material describes. The Netflix Tudum film guide is the source for the quotation.

The fairest way to compare the two films is along three editorial lines, each grounded in what the official material says:
Rank #4
- Top Tier Performance: Handles the ultimate in ultra high definition video, 8K60 4:2:0 10 bit and 4K120 4:4:4 10 bit.
- Set The Standard: HDMI 2.1 and HDCP 2.3 represent the state of the art for video compatibility standards.
- Vibrant Video: HDR, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG pass through improve video quality for the clearest, crispest possible viewing experience.
- Furious Sound: LPCM, Dolby Digital/Plus/Ex, Dolby True HD, DTS, DTS EX, DTS 96/24, DTS High Res, DTS HD Master Audio, and DSD put you in the middle of the action.
- Quick Draw: VRR, FVA, and ALLM ensure the lowest possible latency and fastest refresh rate possible at any given instant for the best reaction time in gaming.
- Premise: The original is built around a single extraction job. The sequel is a follow-up mission that revisits Rake after the events of the first film.
- Character focus: The sequel expands Tyler Rake’s personal backstory, which Netflix presents as the film’s central change.
- Action construction: The sequel’s signature sequence is the 21-minute one-shot scene described above. Netflix’s sources do not provide a comparable measurement for the first film, so this is not a head-to-head ranking.
Neither film can be declared better or more popular on the basis of the official material. Audience viewing figures for either film were not published in the Netflix pages reviewed for this article, so any judgment of relative success would be unsupported.
Where can I watch Extraction 2?
Extraction 2 is streamed on Netflix. Catalog availability can vary by country and by subscription plan, so the title may not appear in every region. The most reliable check is to search for the title in your Netflix app or open the film’s listing on Netflix’s Netflix title page from your own location.
Background reading: the Ciudad graphic novel
Netflix identifies Ciudad, a graphic novel by Ande Parks, as the source material behind the first Extraction film. That makes it useful background for the franchise. It is not the source of Extraction 2, which Netflix presents as an original sequel rather than an adaptation of the book. Read it as context for the world and the character, not as a preview of the sequel’s plot.
