Music may make studying feel more engaging, and it can affect performance on some cognitive tasks. But evidence does not show that background music reliably improves learning for everyone. Whether it helps depends on the listener, the music, and the task—and the best test is whether you remember or understand more, not just whether the session feels pleasant.
What studies say about music and learning
Direct evidence on learning outcomes is mixed. In a 2017 experiment, Lehmann and Seufert asked 81 college students to learn visual text while hearing one of two pop songs or studying in silence. Background music had no overall effect on recall, and neither working-memory capacity nor its interaction with music changed that result. For comprehension, however, the effect of music varied with working-memory capacity. The findings do not establish one outcome for every learner or task. Read the study in Frontiers in Psychology.
Other research looks at attention or short cognitive tasks rather than learning course material. A 2021 literature review reported improved performance on attention tasks in the studies it examined, but cautioned that differences in methods and study designs make the results hard to generalize. A 2024 review of 31 studies likewise found mixed or insufficient evidence connecting auditory stimulation, arousal, and cognitive performance; it described support for the proposed arousal-mood explanation as indirect. These findings leave open the possibility that music affects attention for some people, but do not prove that a playlist improves study results. 2021 review; 2024 review.
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 32 studies—16 on listening and 16 on music-based interventions—reported small positive effects for some cognitive outcomes. Effects on attention were weaker and more varied. Music therapy, training, or group sessions are structured interventions, not the same thing as playing background music during homework, so the review does not establish that ordinary study playlists improve learning. 2026 review.

Why results can vary by task and listener
Music may coincide with different results depending on what a person is doing and what outcome a study measures. A 2024 experiment with 311 young and older adults assessed visuospatial working memory after excerpts by Mozart, Vivaldi, or Glass, or silence. The effects varied with the task and participants’ emotional responses. That is evidence of task-specific effects—not proof that any composer or style improves studying in general. 2024 working-memory study.
A brief change in performance on a laboratory task is not the same as remembering material later or understanding a lesson. Studies of attention, spatial reasoning, or working memory cannot by themselves establish better recall, comprehension, grades, or long-term learning. The 2017 text-learning experiment is especially relevant to that distinction: its recall results showed no overall benefit from background music.

Does Mozart make you smarter?
No. The so-called Mozart effect refers to a narrow, temporary improvement reported on some spatial-reasoning tasks after listening to Mozart’s K.448. It does not demonstrate a general intelligence boost or show that Mozart helps people learn course material. Replications have been conflicting, including failures to reproduce the effect. There is no well-supported universal winner among genres or a proven setup that works for everyone. Lyrics may plausibly compete for attention during reading, writing, or verbal memorization, but the evidence summarized here does not establish that they always do. For routine or repetitive work, you may prefer music; preference alone does not show that you are learning more.

Try a simple comparison using the same kind of work in both conditions. Keep the task and study time as similar as possible, then check recall or comprehension afterward rather than judging only by how focused or comfortable the session felt.
- Choose a specific task. For example, read a short section, memorize a set of terms, or complete a similar set of practice problems.
- Compare your usual music with silence. Use the same material difficulty and amount of study time where practical.
- Check what you learned. Afterward, test recall without looking at your notes or answer questions that assess comprehension.
- Repeat before deciding. One session may not represent your usual performance. Keep the condition that supports the learning outcome you care about, rather than the one that merely feels better.
This comparison is a practical way to apply mixed research findings; it is not a formal experiment, and it cannot establish a universal rule for other people or subjects.
