Disney has confirmed that Zootopia 3 is in early development at Walt Disney Animation Studios, and it has said birds will play a major role in the film. It has not announced a release date, a full plot, or what the film will look like. The idea that Disney’s animation leadership already knows the film’s visual design goes beyond what the studio has published.
What Disney has confirmed, and what it has not
Disney’s status is set out in two official communications: the D23 Entertainment Showcase in August 2026, and a follow-up report dated September 4, 2026. The table below separates what those statements establish from what remains open.

The birds and the feather at the end of Zootopia 2
Disney ties the bird direction to the feather shown at the end of Zootopia 2, which was released November 26, 2025. Disney has not said what the feather signifies or which species will appear. Jared Bush, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, said at D23: “The idea of bringing birds into this world is something that we’ve been excited about for years.” He also said the sequel would bring back familiar characters while introducing new elements, and that what the feather means for Nick, Judy, and the wider world is “going to be the fun surprise of this movie.”
That phrasing is the most specific official statement so far. Anything beyond it, including a named bird character or a story arc, is speculation until Disney says more.

Why “already knows what it will look like” goes too far
The headline’s claim rests on the idea that Disney’s creative leadership has settled the film’s look. The official material does not show that. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ general visual-development page says designs are built from the script and the directors’ vision, but it does not show or describe any Zootopia 3 designs.
Disney also screened an exclusive sequence for the D23 audience, shown alongside Bush, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Ke Huy Quan. That sequence has not been published in full, so nothing about its visuals can be checked from official sources. Readers should treat any description of the film’s look that goes beyond Disney’s statements as unverified.

Who said what
- Jared Bush, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, is the franchise’s writer and a director of Zootopia 2. He is the creative lead quoted on the birds and the sequel’s tone.
- Clark Spencer, President of Disney Animation, said: “But, at its core, this is always going to be a story about Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps.” That is a statement about focus, not a plot summary.
- Ke Huy Quan said he does not know what is in store for Gary De’Snake, but said he would be interested in returning to the recording booth. That is not a cast confirmation.
The title’s phrase “head of animation” fits Spencer’s role more closely than Bush’s, but neither has published design details for the film.
Release timing
Disney has not given a date or season. Its official statements say timing will be announced later, and no window has been set. Any date circulating before a Disney announcement should be treated as unconfirmed.

For context, Disney’s own Bush interview describes theme parks, cruise ships, and consumer products as extensions of the franchise, with Disney Store as a retail outlet. The original film’s box office, which exceeded $1 billion worldwide according to The Walt Disney Company’s 2025 figures, is a figure for the 2016 film, not for the sequel or the third film.

TechRadar’s November 29, 2025 article reported that the third film was unconfirmed. That was accurate on the day it was published. Disney’s August 2026 announcement changed the status, so the article should be read as a record of the time, not of the current position.

The same earlier TechRadar interview contains a remark that sometimes gets read as a setting clue. Bush said there are “a lot of different biomes that we’d still love to visit,” and added: “I’m still looking forward to going to Outback Island one day.” That expresses creative interest. It does not confirm where Zootopia 3 takes place.
Until Disney names a setting, a release window, or a cast list, the confirmed facts are the development stage, the role of birds, and the continued focus on Nick and Judy.
