Manga Rock’s shutdown and the planned MR Comics platform were announced in September 2019—not in a verified new announcement in 2026. The team said it would close Manga Rock because keeping a service built around unauthorized comics online while developing a licensed alternative would still support scanlation piracy. MR Comics was presented as a separate, authorized platform, but the sources documenting the announcement do not establish whether its planned catalog and features launched or whether the service operates today.
What happened to Manga Rock?
In September 2019, Not A Basement Studio, the operator of Manga Rock, announced that it would shut down the manga-reading platform and work on a separate project called MR Comics. The decision followed discussions with publishers and creators. The team said it had initially considered removing unauthorized content and renaming Manga Rock once it had built a substantial licensed catalog, but concluded that keeping the existing platform online during that transition would continue to support piracy.
TorrentFreak reported on September 5, 2019, that Manga Rock’s Google Play app had already been removed and that the iOS app and website were expected to follow. La Tercera described the announced schedule as mobile-app removals in the first week of September and the website closing or redirecting in the second week. Those reports describe the intended timeline; they do not verify the exact date each service went offline. TorrentFreak’s September 5, 2019 report and La Tercera’s September 5, 2019 coverage document the announcement.
Why did Manga Rock shut down?
The team said that continuing to host Manga Rock while it built a legitimate replacement would undermine its effort to move away from unauthorized distribution. TorrentFreak reproduced the team’s explanation: “As we made contact with more publishers and creators, we realized that by keeping Manga Rock around while developing the new platform, we are still inadvertently hosting and supporting the practices of piracy.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The team’s stated rationale was therefore not simply that it planned to change the app’s name or remove particular titles. It believed the existing platform itself would keep enabling scanlation piracy during a transition, so it chose to close it rather than operate both services in parallel.
What was MR Comics supposed to be?
MR Comics was described in 2019 as an authorized comics platform, separate from Manga Rock. La Tercera reported that the team had signed agreements with some publishers and was working with independent artists. The plans also included tools for distributing and monetizing creators’ work and ways for readers to pay to support creators.

These were ambitions reported at the time, not confirmation of a completed replacement. The available reports do not establish how many licenses were secured, which comics they covered, whether the described tools and payment features launched, or MR Comics’ present operating status. In particular, the announcement alone is not evidence that MR Comics became a fully licensed successor with a catalog comparable to Manga Rock’s former offering.
Did the Manga Rock team apologize?
Yes. TorrentFreak reproduced the team’s apology: “Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years. Once again, we’re deeply sorry for everything.” The wording expresses an apology but does not, by itself, specify every action or harm the team was apologizing for.

In an MR Comics-authored post dated August 30, 2019, Mia Ng discussed removing content and explaining scanlation and piracy to readers. The post acknowledged that readers whose favorite comics were removed might turn to another scanlation site, and described an effort to explain piracy’s impact while the team tried to become legitimate. The MR Comics post provides that context.
Is the announcement new, and is MR Comics active now?
The announcement covered here dates to September 2019. A page carrying a similar headline and a 2026 publication date does not, in its visible material, establish a fresh announcement from the team. The sources documenting the 2019 plans also do not establish MR Comics’ current status, available catalog, or regional availability. It is more accurate to describe MR Comics as the authorized platform Manga Rock’s operator planned in 2019 than to present it as a confirmed active service today.

How can former readers find manga legally?
The 2019 reports do not identify a verified successor service or establish current alternatives. Readers looking for a particular series can check whether its publisher offers an authorized digital edition or whether a legitimate print edition is available in their region. Availability, supported devices, and terms differ by series and publisher; a purchase of a print volume should not be taken as support for MR Comics or the former Manga Rock team.
