Markiplier’s channel grew through indie-game playthroughs and the audience relationships he built around them. In a 2013 interview, Mark Fischbach described putting long hours into the channel, responding personally to viewers, keeping a steady publishing schedule, and relying on word of mouth. Those are his account of what he did—not proof that any one tactic caused his growth or a formula other creators can reproduce.
Who is Markiplier?
Markiplier is the online name of Mark Edward Fischbach. In a 2019 WIRED interview, he explained that the name combines “multiplier” with his own name in front.
What kind of videos helped him find an audience?
The Associated Press describes Fischbach’s rise as grounded in playthroughs of indie video games. That format put his reactions and personality at the center while giving viewers a game to follow. The available reporting does not establish a definitive list of the first games he played, or identify a particular title as the one that made him famous.
How did he say the channel grew?
In a 2013 Cancer Research Institute interview, Fischbach recalled that growth started slowly and then picked up. He remembered reaching about 5,000 subscribers in September, around 10,000 between September and October, 50,000 in December, 100,000 in late January, and nearly 200,000 by March. These are approximate milestones from his recollection; the interview excerpt does not independently verify them or explicitly identify the year for each milestone.

Personal interaction and recommendations
Fischbach said he spent time reading comments and messages, replying to viewers himself, and thanking subscribers. He believed those interactions helped supporters feel connected enough to tell friends about the channel: “Most YouTube channels grow because of word of mouth.” — Mark Fischbach, Cancer Research Institute interview (2013).
Time and effort
He recalled devoting 10–12 hours a day to the channel when starting out. That figure describes his early routine as he told it in the interview, not a measured requirement for building an audience or advice that every creator should match.

A schedule viewers could count on
Fischbach’s advice was to give viewers a reason to return and then follow through on a publishing rhythm. “If you do a weekly video, stick to that schedule.” In the same 2013 interview, he said he was uploading daily at that point and spending three to four hours a day on the channel. Those details describe his practice then; they do not establish his present upload schedule or a universal rule for channel growth.
How gaming connected to a broader career
Playthroughs were part of a wider creative path, rather than the whole story. AP reports that Fischbach went on to create series and podcasts before making Iron Lung, a film he wrote, edited, and self-distributed. In a 2026 interview with the YouTube Official Blog, he discussed how the relationship with viewers changed as the audience grew: “When I had 100 subscribers, my focus was interacting personally with everyone.” He also said, “Numbers are thrown around by businesses and people that care about the metrics too much.”

That later audience relationship extended beyond video views. Fischbach described fans contacting theaters to secure screenings for Iron Lung, illustrating how audience participation played a role in this particular project. He said, “You can build things of scale without needing to sell out 4,000 screens.” This is an example of his experience, not evidence that other creators can expect the same reach or results.

The 2013 Cancer Research Institute interview also connected audience-building with charitable work. Fischbach said creators should choose a cause that resonates personally and tell their own story without exploiting the cause. The interview reported that he had raised nearly $80,000 for charity as of July 2013; that figure is the interview’s reported total at that time, not a current fundraising figure.

What the account does—and does not—establish
Taken together, the sources point to complementary parts of Fischbach’s story: indie-game playthroughs supplied the format, while he credited sustained effort, direct audience engagement, consistency, and word of mouth with helping him build a community. His retrospective comments explain how he understood his own experience; they do not prove that a single game, upload tactic, or YouTube recommendation caused the channel’s growth. The sources also do not establish his first game series, any monetization or AdSense difficulties, his current subscriber count, or his current upload frequency.
