Zootopia 3 is officially in early development at Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Disney has not announced when it will reach theaters. The only concrete story signal so far comes from Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush, who said birds will play a major role and tied that to the feather floating onto Judy Hopps’s windowsill in the post-credits scene of Zootopia 2. He has not yet explained what the feather means.
What Disney has confirmed
- Development: Disney announced at its August 2026 D23 Entertainment Showcase that Zootopia 3 is officially in early development.
- Release timing: Not announced. Disney says timing will be revealed at a later date, so any date circulating online is unconfirmed.
- Story direction: Birds will play a major role, according to Bush in a Disney interview published September 4, 2026.
What Jared Bush said about birds and the feather
In that September 4 interview, Bush first explained the thinking behind the new direction:
“The idea of bringing birds into this world is something that we’ve been excited about for years.”
He then pointed back to the ending of the previous film:

“Obviously, at the end of Zootopia 2, you see this little teaser of a feather coming in. What that means for Nick and Judy, what that means for the world of Zootopia, that’s going to be the fun surprise of this movie.”
What is established about the feather
The post-credits scene of Zootopia 2 shows a feather floating onto Judy’s windowsill. Bush has connected that image to birds becoming part of the next film. That is the full extent of what Disney has said on the subject.

Disney has not said what the feather signifies for Nick, Judy, or the city, and it has not named any bird characters or described plot events. Fan theories about specific birds or storylines are speculation until Disney confirms them.

Bush said the filmmakers want the franchise’s most popular characters back while also pushing the story somewhere new:

Zootopia 2’s box-office record
On January 18, 2026, Disney announced that Zootopia 2 had surpassed Inside Out 2 to become the highest-grossing animated Motion Picture Association (MPA) film worldwide, at a $1.703 billion global gross at that point. The headline phrase “Disney’s highest-grossing animated movie” is looser than Disney’s wording, so the record should be stated with the MPA qualifier. Disney later reported a higher total in a March 19, 2026 update from Disney+ Press.
| Reported figure | Publisher and date | What the figure measures | Record wording used |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1.703 billion worldwide | The Walt Disney Company, January 18, 2026 | Worldwide gross at the time of the announcement | Surpassed Inside Out 2 as the highest-grossing animated MPA film worldwide |
| $1.9 billion worldwide | Disney+ Press, March 19, 2026 | Worldwide total cited in a premiere-week update for Disney+ | Not stated as a new record in this update |
The two totals are dated reports from different points in the film’s run, so the March figure should be read as a later total rather than a second record announcement.
Streaming performance
The same March 19, 2026 Disney+ Press update reported that Zootopia 2 drew 32 million global views in its first seven days on Disney+, and that it was Disney+’s number-one film during its premiere week. Disney also said that Zootopia, Zootopia+, and Zootopia 2 had together been streamed for more than 885 million hours globally. Both are company-reported figures from that date, not independent audience measurements.
