Zooey Deschanel has two children with her former husband, Jacob Pechenik: a daughter, Elsie Otter, and a son, Charlie Wolf. Public information about them is limited to their names, the months their arrivals were reported, and a few remarks Deschanel has made in interviews and talk-show appearances. This profile covers only that material and dates each detail so you can see how current it is.
Who are Zooey Deschanel’s children?
Deschanel’s children are Elsie Otter and Charlie Wolf. The table below lists what the main sources report about each of them.
| Child | Name as reported | Arrival as reported | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daughter | Elsie Otter | Welcomed in July 2015 | People report, republished by Yahoo Sports (2017) |
| Son | Charlie Wolf (surname Pechenik in the same report) | Arrival reported in a May 2017 People report | People report, republished by Yahoo Sports (2017) |
Elsie Otter
Elsie is the older of the two. The 2017 People report, republished by Yahoo Sports, gives her name and says she was welcomed in July 2015. In a 2020 conversation on The Drew Barrymore Show, the host mentioned that Elsie is a fan of cats. That remark is dated and comes from one conversation.
Charlie Wolf
Charlie is the son. The May 2017 People report gives his name and identifies his surname as Pechenik, matching his father’s. The same 2020 Drew Barrymore Show conversation described Charlie as very interested in dinosaurs.

Their ages in recent coverage
A 2025 People interview, republished by Yahoo, gave Elsie’s age as 10 and Charlie’s as 8. Those numbers describe that moment. The children have grown since then, and no current age is established by the sources reviewed.
Who else is part of the family picture?
Recent reports from 2025 identify Jonathan Scott as Deschanel’s fiancé and describe him as a bonus father figure to the children. Those descriptions were accurate at publication. The 2025 coverage does not establish whether the relationship has changed since.

What has Deschanel shared about them?
Elf and the children
In a December 2025 E! report, Deschanel described her children’s exposure to the holiday film Elf: “They’ve seen part of it, but they weren’t really that into watching it.” This is her account of a family anecdote, not a statement from the children, and it does not describe how they reacted to the film in any detail beyond that.
Co-parenting with Jacob Pechenik
In the same December 2025 E! co-parenting report, Deschanel spoke about her children’s father: “It’s awesome because my kids’ dad is a great dad.” It is one of the few on-the-record comments she has made about Pechenik’s role, and it is a 2025 statement.

Interests the children have been described as having
The 2020 Drew Barrymore Show conversation is the only source that names specific interests. In the transcript excerpt hosted by Paramount Press Express, the conversation includes the lines “Now I heard that Elsie is a cat fan” and “Charlie I heard is very obsessed with dinosaurs.” These are remarks from 2020 and describe the children as they were then.
A 2025 red-carpet report said the children were exploring creative interests. That description is general. It does not point to any particular talent or career, and it should not be read as one.

How to read these details
- Dates are months and years, not birthdays. The 2015 and 2017 dates come from reports of their arrivals. Exact birth dates have not been published in the sources reviewed.
- Ages and relationships are snapshots. The 2025 ages and the description of Jonathan Scott were correct when published. Check newer coverage before repeating them.
- Interests come from anecdotes. The cat, dinosaur, Elf, and creative-interest remarks are adults describing the children in interviews. They are not tested preferences or statements from the children themselves.
- Private matters are not covered here. The published sources do not address schooling, residences, health, or custody arrangements, and this profile does not speculate about them.
