What Zendaya said happened
Entertainment Tonight published its interview report on April 22, 2024, four days before Challengers opened in theaters on April 26, 2024. In the piece, Zendaya, co-stars Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor, and interviewer Denny Directo discussed filming the intimate scenes and what it was like to see the movie with family at the premiere. Her account of the seating is the detail that makes the story work. Her relatives sat behind her, and because she had already seen the film many times, she knew what was coming. She could watch their faces rather than the screen. In her words: “It was funny ’cause, you know, obviously I’ve seen the movie many times so I know what’s coming, and they were all sitting behind me, and I got to, like, watch them watch and slowly just be like, ‘Oh god,'”
Why the family was not caught off guard
Zendaya said the relatives had been warned before they sat down. They knew the film’s rating and what it was about. Her family had also already seen Euphoria, the HBO series that made Zendaya’s name for intense, adult storytelling. She put it this way: “They’ve all seen Euphoria, you know, so it’s not like our first rodeo or anything.”

A separate Entertainment Tonight report dated April 19, 2024 independently describes the family seeing the film after being warned about its rating and subject, and repeats the detail that Zendaya watched the relatives react from the row behind her. Steamy, but not explicit
The word “steamy” is the headline’s, and it reflects how the film was marketed and discussed rather than a description of explicit content. Entertainment Tonight reports that Zendaya joked the film contains no explicit sex scenes, while still saying it is uncomfortable enough that you would not want to watch it with an aunt. She said: “It’s still enough to not want to watch with your aunt.”

That distinction matters. The joke is about the emotional charge and the awkwardness of watching romantic and sexual tension in a room full of relatives, not a statement that the film is graphic. Anyone deciding whether to watch it with family should weigh that tone, and check the film’s official rating and content guidance for specifics.
How the intimate scenes were made
The same interview makes clear that the intimate sequences were staged filmmaking, not spontaneous. Mike Faist called the process “really practical.” Josh O’Connor described the camera and boom operator working close to the cast during the three-way kiss scene, and said: “That’s the magic of filmmaking, is what comes out of the screen.”

Zendaya pushed back on any sense that the scenes involved only the actors: “It’s not just the three of us. It’s a whole crew also who’s a part of the scenes.” The point is a practical one. Those scenes were planned, shot, and edited by a full production team, and the cast was working within that structure.
