Most people searching for its tab, a PDF or its tempo want one of three things: a playable transcription, an authorised score, or the tempo an exam board expects. These are different materials, and they do not agree on every detail. The community tab specifies DADGBE tuning, D major and 4/4 time, with a MIDI tempo of 134 quarter-note beats per minute. RSL’s sample score carries an approximate marking of quarter note = 146. Both figures are set out below, with the source of each.
What Promise is and where it appears
Yvonne Bloor is a British composer, and Promise is one of her solo works for classical guitar. Her official website says the piece was published by Trinity College of Music for the 2016 examination series. RSL Awards also lists it among its Grade 6 performance pieces. The community tab refers to the Trinity College Grade 6 Guitar Exam Book 2016–19, so the piece’s exam appearances are tied to specific syllabus cycles. If you are entering an exam, confirm the current syllabus with the board before planning around this piece.
Tuning: dropping the sixth string to D
The tab and RSL’s performance notes both call for the lowest string to be lowered from E to D, giving DADGBE tuning. The tab names the tuning directly, and RSL describes the same change as lowering the sixth string by a step.
- Tune the guitar to standard tuning (EADGBE) first, so the other five strings are correct before you change the sixth.
- Loosen the sixth (low E) string until it sounds D. The change is a whole step, two semitones.
- Check the result with a tuner, or compare the 12th-fret harmonic on the sixth string with the open fourth string (D). The two should sound in unison.
- Retune the sixth string after any change in temperature or after the strings have stretched, because a dropped string drifts more than the others.
Key, meter and how the tab is laid out
The community transcription marks the piece in D major and 4/4. These details come from that transcription, so treat them as its edition’s markings rather than as a publisher’s statement.

The tab’s notes describe the following features, which are the parts most likely to trip up a reader working from tablature:
- 3+3+2 groupings: within a bar, notes are grouped as three, three and two. The pattern gives a lilting, uneven pulse rather than an even four-beat feel, so count the groups before you play the bar.
- Triplets: three evenly spaced notes played in the time of two. RSL specifically asks for a secure triplet rhythm.
- Sustained notes and natural harmonics: hold a note for its full value, and use the touch-points indicated for harmonics.
- Fermatas, repeats and pull-offs: pauses, sections to repeat, and left-hand notes sounded by pulling a finger off a string.
Tempo: two markings that do not match
There is no single agreed tempo for Promise in the available material. The two figures below come from different sources and should be read in their own context.
| Source | Tempo marking | Date and context | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community tab (Scribd-hosted transcription) | Quarter note = 134 (MIDI tempo) | Transcription dated 2017 | The tempo of the transcription’s MIDI playback. The page does not present it as a printed instruction. |
| RSL Awards sample-pack score | Approximately quarter note = 146 | Page indexed in a 2023 download | The indication shown in that sample score only. It is approximate, and 146 is roughly 9% faster than 134. |
| Productions D’Oz score collection (ISBN 978-2-89795-930-2) | Not stated on the composer’s catalogue page | Catalogue page, no date shown | Check the marking printed in the score itself. |
If you are following a particular score, its printed tempo governs your performance. The 134 figure is most useful as a playback reference for the tab’s MIDI file, and the approximate 146 is the figure to compare against if you are working from RSL material.

Tab, score or exam book: which material to use
| Material | Who produced it | Key, tuning and tempo details | Limits to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community tab (Scribd-hosted, 2017) | Independent transcriber | D major, 4/4, DADGBE, MIDI 134 bpm | Says its sheet edition came from Bloor’s website and differs slightly from the Trinity Grade 6 Guitar Exam Book 2016–19; gives measure 39 as an example. Permission to share it is not established. |
| Productions D’Oz solo guitar collection (ISBN 978-2-89795-930-2) | Composer-linked publisher | Tempo not stated on the catalogue page | Published as a 16-page collection of six pieces. |
| Sheet Music Plus digital score (ISBN 9782897959302, item DZ 4013) | Les Productions d’OZ – Digital | Tempo not stated on the retailer listing | Listed as a 17-page advanced solo classical guitar score. |
| RSL Awards sample-pack score | RSL Awards | Approximately quarter note = 146; D major; sixth string lowered to D | A sample score for exam guidance, not a full publication. |
For a reliable score, use the composer-linked publisher or the exam-book edition. The community tab is useful for checking the tab’s descriptive details, but it should not override the printed score, because its own text says it differs from the exam book.
Playing guidance from RSL
RSL’s performance notes give practical advice that goes beyond the notes themselves. These are the board’s descriptions and do not come from a recording test.
Relaxed fretting
Keep the left hand relaxed so that the passages with repeated figures do not tighten up. Economical fretting helps the triplet passages keep their evenness.

Legato open strings
RSL highlights the melodic effect of open strings. Sustain them smoothly so they connect with the fretted notes around them.
Arpeggiated patterns
The notes describe arpeggiated figures and picking-hand combinations. Practise these slowly, with each finger’s string clearly separated, before raising the tempo.

Score options and buying notes
The composer’s sheet-music page lists Promise in a printed collection of six solo guitar pieces, published by Productions D’Oz and containing Praise, Prayer, Promise, Caprice, Chanson and Majesty. The page gives the ISBN as 978-2-89795-930-2 and says the book and a digital download are available from Productions D’Oz and Sheet Music Plus. Sheet Music Plus’s own listing describes a separate 17-page digital score (ISBN 9782897959302), and states that digital downloads can be accessed on a computer, tablet or mobile device.
Use the ISBN when searching for a printed copy. Stock at other retailers, including Amazon, was not confirmed when these sources were checked, so verify any listing before buying.

Quick Recap
Recommended approach
- Work from the composer-linked score or the exam-book edition for notes, fingering and tempo.
- Use the community tab only as a reference for its descriptive details, and treat its file as unofficial.
- Set the tempo from the marking in your chosen edition. Use 134 for the tab’s playback and 146 only as the RSL sample-score reference.
- Tune to DADGBE before you start, and recheck the sixth string whenever you resume practice.
