Zendaya’s ab-baring naked dress was a vintage Bob Mackie couture gown from his Fall 2001 collection, “Foreign Intrigue.” She wore it on October 19, 2024, at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland, Ohio, where she honored and introduced Cher. The look was a deliberate tribute: a nude illusion halter gown, long straight hair, and a matching embellished trench, all pointing back to the Mackie-designed Cher wardrobe that made the “naked dress” famous.
What Zendaya wore
Vogue’s report on the ceremony describes a nude, ab-baring halter dress with criss-crossing straps, covered in hand-sewn rhinestones and gold and white bugle beads. The bodice and straps create the illusion of bare skin, while the beading gives the piece its visual weight on camera.
She paired the gown with a white silk satin trench coat embroidered with similar embellishments, gold bangles, and gold metallic pointed-toe Christian Louboutin shoes. Her long, straight hair was styled to echo Cher’s signature look. Teen Vogue also described the coat and hair, so the outfit’s Cher references were noted by more than one outlet.
Where and when it was worn
The occasion was the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland, held on October 19, 2024. It was not the Met Gala. Zendaya’s speech honored Cher, and the look was chosen to reinforce that tribute rather than to make a fashion statement on its own.

Who made it and where it came from
Coverage identifies the gown as an archival piece from Bob Mackie’s Fall 2001 couture collection, “Foreign Intrigue.” Mackie designed many of Cher’s best-known stage and red-carpet outfits, which is why a Mackie gown was a natural reference for a Cher tribute. Vogue’s 2024 report places the gown directly in that lineage and points to Mackie’s feather- and sequin-covered naked dress for Cher.
Teen Vogue attributed the specific bead description to the fashion house, quoting it as: “nude illusion halter gown entirely hand beaded in gold, diamond and iridescent bugle beads and aurora-borialus [sic] stones.” The “[sic]” marks a misspelling in the reported wording and should be kept in any direct quotation.

Coverage points to two Cher reference looks. They are different garments from different years, and they should not be merged into one.
The 1972 look Teen Vogue compares it to
Teen Vogue reports that Zendaya’s dress was similar to one Cher wore in 1972. The reviewed coverage does not give a designer, a full description, or a photograph reference for that 1972 garment, so any comparison beyond “similar” would go past what the sources establish.

The 1974 Met Gala gown
Vogue reported that Cher wore Mackie’s sheer beaded gown with white feathered sleeves and skirt to the 1974 Met Gala, and later appeared in it on the cover of Time. This is the better-documented Cher-Mackie naked-dress reference. An academic article on naked dresses also discusses this gown and how it moved from a live-event garment into widely circulated imagery.

How Mackie and Zendaya described the design
Mackie described his approach to sheer designs as creating a nude “illusion” through craftsmanship and fabric. On the 1974 gown, he said: “It created a lot of hubbub.” He also explained his general philosophy: “I’m a big proponent of not being able to figure anything out when you look at a dress.”
