Zakir Hussain made the tabla—the paired drums at the heart of his musical life—a voice that could converse across traditions. Rooted in Hindustani classical music, he became known internationally through collaborations with jazz musicians and cross-cultural ensembles, while earning major recognition in India and abroad. He died in San Francisco on December 15, 2024, aged 73.
Who was Zakir Hussain?
Zakir Hussain Allaraka Qureshi was born in Bombay, now Mumbai, India, on March 9, 1951. He was a tabla virtuoso whose career joined deep engagement with Hindustani classical music to a sustained openness to other musical forms. The National Endowment for the Arts describes his instrument as a pair of drums developed to accompany vocal, instrumental and dance music.
That combination matters to understanding his influence: Hussain was not simply a classical soloist who later appeared in other genres. He treated collaboration as a way to explore what the tabla could express in new musical settings. The Kyoto Prize characterized his work as opening “a new musical world beyond the framework of traditional Indian music” through collaborations with musicians from varied genres worldwide.
What instrument did Zakir Hussain play?
The tabla: a pair of drums
The tabla consists of two drums played together. Its different pitches and tones let a player shape rhythm with a degree of detail and responsiveness central to Hindustani classical performance. The National Endowment for the Arts notes that the instrument was developed to accompany vocal, instrumental and dance music.

Hussain’s career made the instrument’s role legible to listeners well beyond that setting. In ensembles with musicians from other traditions, the tabla could act not only as rhythmic support but as an expressive partner. His achievement was not to detach it from its roots, but to bring its musical possibilities into dialogue with new contexts.
What made Zakir Hussain influential around the world?

These groups represent different kinds of exchange rather than one uniform style. Shakti, formed with guitarist John McLaughlin, brought Indian classical music into an ensemble setting shaped by improvisation and jazz. Planet Drum, associated with percussionist Mickey Hart, centered a broader meeting of percussion traditions. CrossCurrents joined Hussain with bassist Dave Holland and saxophonist Chris Potter. The projects show how his work moved between musical settings without making the tabla an interchangeable instrument.
The Kyoto Prize’s description captures the through-line: collaboration extended Hussain’s musical world beyond the conventional boundaries of Indian music. His significance lies not only in the number of projects he joined, but in the way the tabla remained a distinctive voice within them.
