Zelina Vega defeated defending champion Chelsea Green on the April 25, 2025 episode of WWE SmackDown to win the Women’s United States Championship. WWE described it as Vega’s first singles championship. The title change came after two recent non-title wins over Green, so the upset was that Vega captured the championship—not that she had never beaten Green.
How Vega won the championship
WWE’s official highlight announced Vega as the new Women’s United States Champion and identified Green as the champion entering the match: Zelina Vega becomes the NEW Women’s United States Champion. The title match took place on SmackDown on April 25, 2025.
The result followed two recent victories by Vega over Green in matches without the championship at stake, according to WWE’s preview for the April 25 match. WWE had explicitly labeled their April 18 bout a non-title match. That distinction made the April 25 contest the decisive change: Vega turned prior wins into a title victory.
Why it was a milestone for Vega
WWE’s official profile calls the win Vega’s first singles gold. That does not mean it was her first championship of any kind: the same profile credits her with the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, won alongside Carmella, as well as the 2021 Queen’s Crown Tournament victory.
