Critics accept the pairing but not the film around it. Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon are praised for working well together as rivals, while the plotting, set pieces and romantic subplot draw the most criticism. On Rotten Tomatoes, as checked on October 8, 2026, the film has a 49% Tomatometer from 104 critic reviews and a 33% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 audience ratings.
What the critics say
Rotten Tomatoes: a split aggregate
The site’s critics consensus is the most compact summary of the reception: “While Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon work well together as catty combatants, tired set pieces and a misjudged romantic subplot make this an invitation you can file under “maybe.”” The sentence credits the leads and blames the material they are given. Aggregate percentages move as reviews are added, so treat the figures as a dated snapshot rather than a fixed verdict.
Jake Coyle, Associated Press: 2.5 out of 4 stars
Coyle’s 2025 review is the most measured of the three. He rates the film 2.5 out of 4 stars and writes: “The combination works well enough, though it’d be fairer to deem ‘You’re Cordially Invited’ a funnier-than-average wedding movie than it would be a top-grade Ferrell comedy.” He finds the cast capable and singles out Witherspoon’s performance for praise. His objections are structural: he calls the story artificial and predictable, says the film drags, and finds the post-credits sing-along forced.
The Guardian: warmer on the pairing
The Guardian’s review is more positive about the central pairing and about how often the film makes people laugh, while still pointing out comic elements that do not land. No numeric score is cited for this review here, so it should be read for its emphasis rather than compared on a scale with the others.

- Pacing: Coyle says the film drags.
- A post-credits sing-along that Coyle finds forced.
The premise and viewing details
The setup is a double-booked wedding weekend. Two bridal parties arrive at the same venue after separate ceremonies were booked for the same date. Will Ferrell plays Jim, the father of one bride, and Reese Witherspoon plays Margot, the sister of the other. The rivalry between the two families supplies most of the comedy.

- Like broad wedding farce and do not mind familiar setups.
- Are comfortable with a predictable plot if the cast carries the scenes.
It is a weaker fit if you expect tightly built plotting, a convincing romance, or comedy that stays sharp from start to finish. Reviewers who liked the film did so for the performances more than for the story, and the critics who disliked it cited the same weaknesses in the script.
