Matt Cardona, known in WWE as Zack Ryder, returned to SmackDown on November 14, 2025, to face LA Knight in the Last Time is Now Tournament. Knight won and advanced toward a chance to become John Cena’s final opponent. It was not Ryder’s only SmackDown return: a separate 2017 comeback involved his Hype Bros partnership with Mojo Rawley.
What happened when Zack Ryder returned to SmackDown in 2025?
WWE’s official SmackDown highlights page identifies the November 14 match as Zack Ryder’s return against LA Knight in the Last Time is Now Tournament. WWE described the result this way: “The Megastar moves one step closer to becoming John Cena’s final opponent with a victory over the returning Zack Ryder in the Last Time is Now Tournament.”
Sports Illustrated’s event report says Knight caught Ryder after a top-rope jump with a mid-air powerbomb, then hit the BFT for the pin. The win sent Knight to the tournament quarterfinals. The tournament was designed to determine Cena’s final opponent.
Who is Zack Ryder, and why is Matt Cardona’s name relevant?
Zack Ryder is the WWE ring name associated with performer Matt Cardona. In its account of the November 14 match, Sports Illustrated refers to Cardona as the mystery opponent while describing the presentation as Ryder, also called the Long Island Iced-Z. That distinction helps explain why coverage of the return may use both names.

A January 2, 2026, Wrestling Inc. report described Cardona facing Kit Wilson on New Year’s SmackDown and being announced as a member of the SmackDown roster. The report noted that he was introduced and referred to as Cardona, while the titantron initially displayed Ryder. Those are details of that broadcast; they do not establish what name WWE will use in future appearances.
How was the 2025 return different from Ryder’s 2017 comeback?
| Return | Presentation and context | Opponent or role | Immediate result |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 2017 | Return after a knee injury, in the Hype Bros tag-team context | Partnered with Mojo Rawley | The available Cageside Seats summary describes the team’s return but does not establish match details or a specific result. |
| November 14, 2025 | Presented as Zack Ryder in the Last Time is Now Tournament | Singles match against LA Knight | Knight won and advanced to the quarterfinals. |
The 2017 account comes from a Cageside Seats report. Its summary says Ryder had been injured after the Hype Bros became tag-team title contenders and that his return could add depth to the tag division. The available account does not support adding specific match action.

What is the main takeaway from the 2025 SmackDown appearance?
It was a one-on-one tournament match, not the 2017 Hype Bros reunion: Knight defeated Ryder, and the result moved Knight forward in the bracket tied to Cena’s final opponent. Coverage of the performer’s name should be read in its broadcast context—WWE called him Zack Ryder for the November 2025 return, while later reporting documented Cardona being used on the January 2026 show.
