Later reporting associated that episode with foot and ankle problems. Beard died at 77 in August 2026; the cause of death was not disclosed. The 2025 absence and a separate health matter reported in 2026 should not be treated as connected.
Why did Frank Beard step away from ZZ Top’s tour?
In March 2025, ZZ Top management said Beard had temporarily left the current tour to focus on a health issue requiring his attention in the near term. The announcement did not identify the condition. Blabbermouth.net reproduced the management statement, which also said he was “looking forward to a speedy recovery.” That was management’s wording, not a direct quote from Beard.
Later reporting described the 2025 problem as involving Beard’s foot and ankle. The Los Angeles Times reported those problems in its coverage of the events; the original 2025 announcement itself had not provided those details.
Who played drums while Beard was away?
John Douglas filled in during Beard’s 2025 tour absence. The band’s arrangements changed again in 2026: during its Big One tour, Michael Monahan was reported as substituting for Beard amid a separate health matter. The Los Angeles Times said details of that 2026 condition were not released.

What happened in 2026?
In August 2026, ZZ Top canceled a Hollywood Bowl performance amid Beard’s health issues, while the band continued its Big One tour with Monahan substituting. On Aug. 18, the Los Angeles Times reported that Beard had died at 77 and that the band canceled upcoming shows after his death.
The cause of Beard’s death was not disclosed in that report. The available reporting does not establish that his 2025 foot and ankle problems caused, contributed to, or were otherwise connected with his later health matter or death.
