After a recess, Whitaker denied Young Thug’s defense motion for a mistrial. Her remarks questioned whether the problems were deliberate or reflected poor lawyering; they were not a formal finding that prosecutors committed misconduct.
What prompted the judge’s criticism
The exchange took place outside the jury’s presence during the Fulton County trial. Contemporary reporting said new discovery appeared to have been shared with attorneys that morning, amid the judge’s concerns about disclosure and how the state was presenting its case. Whitaker addressed lead prosecutor Adriane Love and questioned why problems seemed to keep recurring.
Atlanta News First published a transcript excerpt the next day. Whitaker said it was “baffling” that an experienced prosecutor seemed to “hide the ball” repeatedly, then made clear she was uncertain whether the conduct was purposeful or the result of disorganization. She also said the haphazard presentation was making the case more difficult for everyone. Did the judge grant a mistrial?
No. Young Thug attorney Brian Steel sought a mistrial, but Whitaker denied the motion after a short recess. The ruling meant the trial continued; it did not resolve the underlying case or establish that the prosecution had committed misconduct.

What the criticism does—and does not—establish
Whitaker’s comments were severe judicial criticism of the prosecution’s handling and presentation. She openly raised the possibility that recurring problems were intentional, but also said they might reflect poor lawyering or disorganization. The contemporaneous accounts report no ruling in this exchange finding intentional concealment or prosecutorial misconduct. Treating her frustration as proof of intent would go beyond what the reported ruling establishes.
What the YSL case was about
The case involved Jeffery Williams, known as Young Thug, and co-defendants. Prosecutors alleged that Young Slime Life, or YSL, was a criminal street gang. The defense disputed that characterization and pointed to YSL’s use as the name of Young Thug’s Young Stoner Life record label. The distinction mattered in a case where the state used music and social-media material as evidence. These were competing positions in the case, not interchangeable meanings of the acronym.

What happened after the September exchange
The September mistrial motion was not the final disposition of Young Thug’s case. On Oct. 31, 2024, he pleaded guilty. Axios reported that Whitaker imposed a total 40-year sentence, with the first five years commuted to time served and the next 15 years on probation. The reported probation conditions included staying outside the metro Atlanta area for the first 10 years, subject to specified exceptions, and completing community service. Axios reported the plea, sentence and conditions on Oct. 31, 2024.
In November 2024, the Associated Press reported that Young Thug and three other defendants had pleaded guilty while proceedings continued against two remaining defendants. The AP described a trial marked by delays and problems and reported that Whitaker often lost patience with prosecutors. The AP’s November retrospective places the courtroom exchange within that longer trial, rather than presenting it as a current trial development.
