George is a fictional character. Barber plays him, and the death is a plot event. It says nothing about Barber’s health or his life. The farewell is about the end of the series and the storyline, not a real loss for the actor.
What happens to George in the finale
George Cooper Sr., played by Lance Barber, dies during the show’s last story arc. The final two episodes follow the Cooper family as they grieve and prepare for his funeral.

How the cast said goodbye
Iain Armitage, who plays Sheldon Cooper, told the Los Angeles Times that the ending was difficult for much of the cast. In his words: “For so many people on our set, myself included, it was very hard to say goodbye.” Armitage’s recollections of Barber give a sense of how the set treated the storyline.
Barber’s presence on set
Armitage described Barber as a source of energy during production. He said: “He brings such a light to the set … and he’s got such a big personality.” He also recalled Barber being present during rehearsal and enjoying the playful side of the material, saying: “He had a very fun time with his own death.”

The final dinner scene
Armitage recalled that the last dinner scene was filmed without Barber in it, even though Barber was on set that day. The cast and crew gathered in the small dining-room set for the scene, and Armitage said it was the first time he cried about the ending: “That was the first time I cried about the ending.”
The behind-the-scenes posts and funeral speculation
Before the finale aired, several cast members posted behind-the-scenes photos in funeral-appropriate attire. TVLine described posts associated with Raegan Revord, Emily Osment and Rachael Bay Jones, among others. The outfits prompted fans to speculate that the show was filming George’s funeral. Those posts show the cast dressed for a funeral, but they do not on their own establish what was filmed or who else was present.

Why George’s death stayed in the story
Showrunner Steve Holland explained the decision to keep the death in the series. He said: “We are not beholden to every joke that was ever made on The Big Bang Theory, but we do feel beholden to the larger canon and the larger events that shape Sheldon’s life. We want to honor those.” Holland confirmed that George’s death is one of those events. Young Sheldon was therefore not bound to every Big Bang Theory joke, but it treated the family’s established history as fixed.
What the new set photo shows
We could not check the set photo that prompted this coverage against its original post. For that reason, we cannot confirm who posted it, what its caption says, or who appears in it. Crew participation should not be assumed from cast social posts alone. The farewells described above are the part the reporting supports. Readers who see a caption or summary of the image should check the original post before relying on it.
