Young Dolph’s autopsy report lists the cause of death as “Gunshot Wounds of the Head, Neck, and Torso” and the manner of death as “Homicide.” The report documents multiple gunshot wounds and injuries to several organs and bones. Those medical findings do not determine who was criminally responsible.
What did Young Dolph’s autopsy say?
The West Tennessee Regional Forensic Center Office of the Medical Examiner examined Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., the rapper known as Young Dolph. Case 2021-2619 records that he was 36 and died in Memphis on November 17, 2021. The examination took place the next day, and pathologist Juliette B. Scantlebury, M.D., electronically signed the report on February 22, 2022. Read the autopsy report.
The report gives the cause of death as “Gunshot Wounds of the Head, Neck, and Torso” and the manner of death as “Homicide.” Its summary says the determination considered both the investigation and the autopsy findings. In this context, “homicide” is a medical examiner’s classification of the manner of death; it is not, by itself, a ruling on criminal intent or a finding that a particular person is guilty.
How many times was Young Dolph shot?
The autopsy documents multiple gunshot wounds. Its pathological diagnoses list seven torso gunshot wounds, in addition to separately described wounds to the head and neck and both upper extremities. The written inventory distinguishes wounds from entrance and exit sites, tracks, gunshot-related wounds, and bullets found away from the body.

That distinction matters when interpreting public counts: a wound site, an entrance or exit, a bullet path, and a projectile are not interchangeable measures. The Associated Press described the report as documenting “about 20 gunshot wounds,” an approximate secondary-source summary rather than a single count that resolves every way of tallying the report’s entries. Associated Press account. For the precise medical finding, the report’s wording and injury inventory are more useful than reducing the record to a definitive bullet count.
What injuries did the report document?
Beyond the broad cause-of-death wording, the report’s pathological diagnoses describe injuries involving the lungs, liver, spleen, thoracic aorta, small intestine, ribs, vertebrae, diaphragm, and jaw. It also records wounds to the torso, head and neck, and both upper extremities. These findings explain the report’s anatomical description without requiring graphic detail.

Does the report include toxicology results?
The report records collection of blood, urine, vitreous fluid, and liver samples for toxicology. The report copy cited here does not provide a separate toxicology result, so sample collection alone cannot support a conclusion about substances or impairment.
How is the autopsy different from the criminal case?
The medical examiner’s report addresses medical cause and manner of death. Criminal proceedings address the responsibility of defendants under the law, so verdicts and pleas should be reported separately from the autopsy findings.

- Cornelius Smith and Hernandez Govan: The Associated Press later reported that Smith pleaded guilty in 2026 and that Govan was acquitted in August of charges alleging he organized the killing. These are distinct outcomes: a guilty plea and an acquittal, respectively. Associated Press account.
Because court proceedings can change, the latest procedural status should be checked against current court records before relying on a summary of the case.

Tennessee Code § 38-7-110 generally makes county medical examiner reports, toxicology reports, and autopsy reports public documents, subject to exceptions. A court may protect portions if release could seriously impede or impair a homicide or felony investigation. The law distinguishes those reports from deceased persons’ medical records, law-enforcement investigative reports, and photographs, video, or other images of deceased persons.
