You Season 1 follows bookstore manager Joe Goldberg as his interest in aspiring writer Beck escalates into surveillance and coercive behavior. Netflix announced the season’s global launch for December 26, 2018, and identified Caroline Kepnes’s novel You as its source material.
What is You Season 1 about?
Joe Goldberg meets Beck, an aspiring writer, at the bookstore where he works. He becomes fixated on her and uses connected technology and information about her life to pursue her. What begins as an apparent romance from Joe’s point of view develops into an account of obsession, surveillance, and dangerous control.
Netflix’s official 2018 announcement promoted the series as a “21st century love story,” but that phrase is marketing, not a neutral description of Joe’s conduct. The season’s central tension is the gap between how Joe narrates his actions and the harm and invasion of privacy those actions represent.
Who stars in the first season?
- Penn Badgley
- Elizabeth Lail
- Luca Padovan
