Yes. The island used as the setting for Cast Away is Monuriki, a small island in Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands, and it can be visited on organized boat trips from Nadi-area departure points or from some nearby resorts. Access is by booked excursion, not by walking up to the shore, and the price, length and inclusions depend on which operator you choose.
Where the island is and what the filming dates mean
Tourism Fiji identifies Monuriki as the filming location for Cast Away, and its set-jetting guide places it in the Mamanuca group, west of Viti Levu, the main island where Nadi International Airport is located (Tourism Fiji, “Set-Jetting in Fiji”, 2025).

Tourism Fiji dates the production period to January 1999 through May 2000 (Tourism Fiji, “Wilson’s Happily Ever After”, 2025). That span describes when the island was used for the production, not a continuous shoot. Visitors should treat the island as a real place with its own history rather than a studio set that stayed in place.

Three access routes appear in current listings. They are not interchangeable, so compare them before booking.

The Cruisin Fiji option is the one Tourism Fiji presents as the standard day trip. Its Nadi day-trip guide lists “Monuriki Island – Authentic Fijian Day Cruise | Cruisin Fiji” and advises readers to check schedules and details directly with the operator, because they can change (Tourism Fiji, “Quick Guide: Best Island Day Trips from Nadi”, 2025).
The Purple Turtle figure is a resort-specific offer. It does not tell you what a Port Denarau departure costs, and it should not be used as a general price for the island (Deep Blue Fiji, “Cast Away Tour”).

Monuriki or Modriki: which name to search for
Tourism Fiji uses Monuriki for the filming island. The Purple Turtle listing uses Modriki for its excursion destination. Both names refer to the same film-location island in the listings reviewed, but operators do not use one standard spelling. Search with both names and check that the operator’s description mentions the Cast Away set locations or the Mamanuca Islands before paying.
Do not confuse the island with Castaway Island, a separate Fiji destination that carries a similar name. Confirm the exact destination with your chosen operator.

Excursion descriptions cover a mix of sightseeing and time in the water:
- Film locations: The Purple Turtle tour describes a guided visit to the Cast Away set locations on the island.
- Nature: Local flora and fauna are part of the described experience.
- Water and beach: Snorkeling and beach time are offered as options, and the Sheraton listing names swimming and snorkeling among its highlights.
- Scenery: The Sheraton listing describes a cruise across the Mamanuca Islands before reaching Monuriki.
Tourism Fiji promotes the chance to visit “the same beaches” as the film. Whether a particular beach looks like the film is a judgment you can make on arrival. The listings do not provide a side-by-side visual comparison, and this article does not claim one.

Before you book
- Confirm the departure point. Port Denarau departures and resort departures are different products with different boat times.
- Ask whether snorkeling gear is supplied. The published descriptions mention snorkeling but do not say whether masks and snorkels are provided. If you want your own gear, ask before buying it.
- Ask about group size and format. Whether a trip is shared or private is not stated in the listings reviewed.
- Ask about cancellation and weather. The sources do not establish cancellation terms, refund rules or how sea conditions change the itinerary. Tourism Fiji advises checking details with the operator because schedules can change.
- Confirm the current price and currency. The Purple Turtle figure is valid only through 31 March 2027, and the Sheraton listing shows pricing as unavailable.
- Check the listing dates. The Marriott event listing runs from 13 March 2026 to 31 December 2027. Use the operator’s own current trip name when you book.
