No. The Season 3 material available to viewers does not establish who set the cabin fire or who covered it up. In Season 3, Episode 3, “Them’s the Brakes,” the cabin burns in a shared hallucination, and Paramount+’s official Season 3 guide leaves the arson question open. The mystery is unresolved on screen.
What the episode actually shows
In “Them’s the Brakes,” Shauna, Van, and Akilah share a hallucination. Van’s part of it includes the cabin burning. That is an image inside a shared dream, not a flashback and not an eyewitness account of who lit the fire. Viewers should not read it as identifying a culprit.
Series director Jonathan Lisco described the sequence as drawing on the idea of collective dreaming and as a way to make the characters confront painful material. He said:
“Many cultures, the Mayans and other Indigenous cultures, felt that collective dreaming was part of the Shamanistic culture.”

That framing explains why the imagery is thematic. It does not function as a clue about the arson.
Coach Ben’s trial: an accusation, not a shown act
What the official guide says
Season 3 puts Coach Ben on trial for the fire. The group’s jury convicts him. Paramount+’s official Season 3 guide reports that Ben denies setting the fire, and that viewers do not see him commit the act. The guide does not resolve the question.
What the cast says about the trial
Sophie Nélisse, who plays teen Shauna, describes the trial as driven by power within the group. She has said that Shauna uses Ben to regain control, and she added:

“I don’t think she is convinced that he is guilty.”
Steven Krueger, who plays Ben, makes a related point. He stresses that the answer to who started the fire matters less than the consequences of what the group believes. Whatever happened at the cabin, the belief is what propels the story.
What Steven Krueger thinks happened
Krueger’s view is a personal character interpretation, not a confirmed plot point. He has said that he plays Ben as believing he caused the fire, and he has been clear that he does not think Ben meant to kill anyone:

“Accidents happen.”
Krueger is also cautious about whether the show will settle the matter at all: “I’m not sure that we ever truly get a clear-cut answer on that.” His remarks are useful for understanding the character, but they are not a writers’ confirmation of Ben’s guilt.
Separating what is shown, believed, and interpreted
The episode and the trial mix several kinds of information. Keeping them apart shows how little is actually established.
| Layer | Source | What it establishes | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-screen imagery | Season 3, Episode 3 (Van’s shared hallucination) | The cabin is shown burning | Shown, but inside a dream; does not identify who lit it |
| The trial | Paramount+ official Season 3 guide | The group convicts Ben; he denies setting the fire | An accusation; guilt is not shown or confirmed |
| Characters’ beliefs | Trial storyline; Nélisse’s description of Shauna | The group believes Ben is responsible; Shauna’s motive is about power | Belief and motive, not a confirmed fact |
| Actor interpretation | Steven Krueger’s interviews | He plays Ben as believing he caused the fire, without intending deaths | Personal reading; not canon |
| Accident | Steven Krueger’s interviews | An accidental fire is plausible in an old wooden cabin with open flames | Interpretation; not established |
Who covered it up?
The headline’s second question assumes a confirmed arson that someone then concealed. The Season 3 sources reviewed do not establish that premise. They do not name anyone who hid evidence, and the show has not presented a confirmed fire that a cover-up would have to explain. Any named cover-up is speculation built on the accusation, not something the series has shown.

Does the Season 3 finale resolve it?
Coverage of the Season 3 finale reports its major story developments. It does not report a cabin-fire answer. Finale interviews are a useful cross-check on what the cast was willing to say, but they do not discuss the fire directly and do not reveal the writers’ intent.
If you are watching for the answer, the guide and the episode give you the accusation, the denial, and the imagery. They do not give you a verdict.
