La técnica se llama chroma key o clave de color: el software identifica un color elegido y lo vuelve transparente para que se vea la capa de fondo situada detrás. El verde es habitual, pero no siempre es la mejor opción; depende de lo que aparezca en la toma y de cómo se ilumine.
Cómo funciona el chroma key
En una toma con pantalla verde, el fondo de color uniforme sirve como referencia para aislar a la persona u objeto que está delante. En la posproducción se eliminan los píxeles que se parecen al color elegido y se compone el sujeto sobre otra imagen. Así puede parecer, por ejemplo, que un actor flota en el espacio o cuelga de un helicóptero, aunque ese escenario no estuviera detrás durante el rodaje. Adobe describe este proceso como la definición de transparencia a partir de un valor de color o luminancia (documentación de keying en After Effects).
La pantalla no tiene que ser verde ni azul: puede usarse cualquier color sólido que se distinga de lo que debe permanecer visible. Adobe también documenta el uso de pantallas rojas para ciertos objetos no humanos, como maquetas de coches y naves espaciales. La elección consiste en facilitar la separación sin borrar partes del sujeto ni elementos importantes de la escena.
Por qué suele elegirse el verde
Contrasta con muchos sujetos
El verde suele diferenciarse de los tonos de piel, el cabello y buena parte del vestuario, por lo que puede resultar más fácil aislar a una persona. Pero si el sujeto lleva ropa verde o sostiene un objeto de ese color, esas partes también pueden desaparecer al aplicar la clave. La elección debe considerar todo lo que se quiere conservar en el encuadre, no solo la piel.

Es luminoso y habitual en flujos digitales
Adobe señala que el verde tiene más luminancia que el azul. Eso puede hacerlo práctico para escenas diurnas luminosas, aunque una pantalla verde también puede reflejar color sobre el sujeto. El cineasta Charles Yeager resume una tendencia histórica, no una regla: “In the old days with film, blue made it easier to key things. With digital cameras, green is more popular.” (Traducción editorial: «Antes, con película, el azul facilitaba la clave. Con cámaras digitales, el verde es más popular».)
Cuándo puede convenir el azul
La pantalla azul puede ser una opción más adecuada si el vestuario incluye verde, si hay árboles o césped que deban conservarse, o si la escena es oscura y se quiere reducir la luz de color reflejada sobre el actor. Adobe también señala que el cabello rubio puede ser difícil de separar sobre verde por el reflejo de la luz; el contraste con azul puede ayudar en ese caso.

El entorno puede inclinar la decisión en sentido contrario: Adobe recomienda considerar verde cuando la escena incluye una gran masa de agua. Ninguna de estas preferencias es universal. Vestuario, cabello, objetos, iluminación, distancia a la pantalla y resultado buscado pueden cambiar cuál funciona mejor. La pregunta útil es qué color permite distinguir el sujeto del fondo sin eliminar detalles que deben seguir visibles.

Preparar el fondo
- Ilumina la pantalla de manera uniforme para que el color sea lo más constante posible.
- Mantén la superficie lisa y sin arrugas, que pueden crear variaciones de tono.
- Evita que el sujeto lleve el mismo color que se usará para la clave, salvo que se quieran volver transparentes esas zonas.
Separar al sujeto y revisar los bordes
La luz verde o azul puede reflejarse en el sujeto, especialmente en los bordes. Ese derrame de color puede complicar la integración con el fondo nuevo; la distancia entre sujeto y pantalla también influye en el problema. La clave no termina al hacer desaparecer el fondo: hay que ajustar la separación y los bordes para que el sujeto encaje en la composición.

Prever ajustes adicionales
Una pantalla irregular o poco distinguible puede exigir varios efectos y ajustes cuidadosos. Si el fondo no tiene un color constante que el software pueda separar con facilidad, puede hacer falta rotoscopia: dibujar o pintar manualmente el contorno del sujeto fotograma a fotograma. Por eso una tela verde, por sí sola, no produce el efecto terminado; la toma y el trabajo de composición importan tanto como el color elegido. Adobe detalla estas necesidades en su documentación de keying en After Effects.

Cómo decidir entre verde y azul
- Color del sujeto: elige un fondo que no coincida con la ropa, el cabello ni los objetos que deben conservarse.
- Entorno: considera los colores del escenario, como vegetación o agua, y cuáles deben permanecer visibles.
- Luz: ten en cuenta el brillo del fondo y cuánto color puede reflejar sobre el sujeto.
- Bordes: valora la cercanía del sujeto a la pantalla y si el derrame de color será difícil de corregir.
- Calidad de la toma: una superficie uniforme, bien iluminada y sin arrugas facilita el keying; las irregularidades pueden requerir más ajustes.
