Sophia Haley Marks was arrested in July 2023 and accused of federal drug offenses involving fentanyl and alprazolam after authorities said she was believed to have sold drugs to Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, Robert De Niro’s 19-year-old grandson. The available reporting does not establish the claim that she acted after a friend died, or identify that friend. Marks was accused, not found guilty.
What was Sophia Haley Marks accused of?
ABC News reported that Marks, then 20, was arrested in New York City on the night of July 13, 2023, and charged with federal drug offenses involving fentanyl and alprazolam. Law-enforcement sources told ABC she was believed to have sold drugs to De Niro-Rodriguez. Those were allegations at the time of the report, not a finding of guilt. ABC News reported on the arrest and allegations on July 14, 2023.
ABC also quoted U.S. Attorney Damian Williams as saying: “At least one of Marks’s counterfeit pills was purchased and taken by a teenager who subsequently died of a suspected overdose.” Williams further alleged that Marks knew the pills could kill. These statements describe prosecutors’ allegations; they should not be treated as established findings about Marks’s conduct.
What is known about De Niro-Rodriguez’s death?
On July 6, 2023, De Niro-Rodriguez’s mother, Drena De Niro, said publicly that her son had been sold fentanyl-laced pills. At that point, CBS News reported that no cause of death had been provided and that the medical examiner would determine it. Her statement was the family’s early account, not the official cause. CBS News reported her statement and the uncertainty at the time.

In a report published October 31, 2025, CBS New York said the medical examiner had ruled the death accidental, caused by fentanyl, cocaine, and other drugs. The later ruling supplies an official cause that was not available in the first days of coverage. CBS New York reported the medical examiner’s ruling.
What happened after the 2023 arrest?
In October 2025, CBS New York reported that five men had been federally charged in connection with three overdose deaths in 2023, including De Niro-Rodriguez’s. The report described charges and an alleged distribution network; charges are not convictions. It does not establish that any defendant was found guilty. The October 2025 report details those charges.

Is the claim about a friend’s death established?
No. The available reporting establishes the arrest and allegations against Marks, but does not identify a friend, establish that the friend died, or show that such a death preceded or influenced the alleged sale. Without reliable reporting or court material supporting that specific sequence, it should not be presented as fact.
