She was 83. The Associated Press reported that family spokesperson Amanda Micheli said Epper died of natural causes.
Who was Jeannie Epper?
Epper was a stunt performer and coordinator whose work spanned film and television. She doubled for Carter on Wonder Woman, Lindsay Wagner on The Bionic Woman, and Kate Jackson on Charlie’s Angels, taking on physical action that helped bring leading characters’ screen adventures to life.
Her selected credits include Romancing the Stone, Terms of Endearment, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Poltergeist, Minority Report, Kill Bill: Vol. 2, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as well as the television series she is most often remembered for. This is a selection, not a complete filmography.
A career built in a family of stunt performers
Epper came from a family of stunt performers and began working young. The Associated Press described her career as spanning 70 years, beginning when she was nine. The Artemis Women in Action Film Festival’s 2019 program, honoring her with its Stunt Lifetime Achievement Award, described a five-decade career. Those descriptions use different measures and should not be treated as a single agreed career-length figure.

The stunt that earned special recognition
One of Epper’s best-known film stunts came in Romancing the Stone, where she performed the mudslide stunt for Kathleen Turner. The Los Angeles Times reported that Epper received a 1985 Stuntman Award for that work.

Her legacy in a difficult profession
Women historically had fewer opportunities to work as stunt performers. The Television Academy remembers Epper as a pioneer, and she helped found the Stuntwomen’s Association of Motion Pictures. Her career encompassed stunt performance, driving, coordination, and acting.
The Associated Press reported that Epper became the first woman to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Taurus World Stunt Awards, in 2007. That recognition is distinct from the Stunt Lifetime Achievement Award presented to her by the Artemis Women in Action Film Festival in 2019.

Where to hear and see Epper speak about her work
Double Dare, Amanda Micheli’s 2004 documentary, includes Epper and fellow stunt performer and coordinator Zoe Bell, as well as remarks from Steven Spielberg. In the film, Epper reflected: “It’s all I really know, outside of being a mom or a grandma.” Spielberg said of her: “She certainly qualifies to be one of the great stunt coordinators.” Both statements were reported by the Associated Press in connection with the documentary.
The Television Academy also offers selections from Epper’s 2014 oral-history interview, including discussion of a dangerous Wonder Woman stunt, the Stuntwomen’s Association, and her experience as a pioneer. Current streaming or physical-edition availability for Double Dare has not been established.
