Woodman Point Quarantine Station has a documented history of quarantine, deaths, graves and cremation. Ghosts are part of the site’s folklore and optional tour storytelling—not a verified haunting. Today, the former station is part of Woodman Point Recreation Camp, where visitors can explore heritage features subject to site rules and supervised access.

What happened at Woodman Point Quarantine Station?

Land at Woodman Point was reserved for a quarantine station in 1876. Its first buildings were erected in 1886, and the station closed in 1979. Located on a peninsula near Fremantle, it was used to isolate people with contagious diseases, including plague sufferers, from the main hospital population.

The station was a working complex rather than a single building. Its facilities included passenger accommodation, seamen’s quarters, a medical officer’s residence and surgery, dining and kitchen facilities, a laundry, a fumigation block, ablutions and a recreation building. The site’s official heritage trail describes a limestone “sea to sea” wall built in 1886, with one small and one large gate forming the only land access—a physical barrier that reinforced the station’s isolation.

Deaths, burials and the crematorium

Death is part of the documented history that gives the site its somber atmosphere. The State heritage inventory records that people who died of contagious disease at the station were cremated there; the crematorium was last used in 1943. The inventory also identifies Sister Rosa O’Kane among those buried on site.

The Western Australian Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries lists 98 people as dying, buried or cremated at the Quarantine Station between 1893 and 1943. That wording matters: the figure does not mean all 98 were cremated. The State heritage inventory describes the crematorium as Australia’s first and oldest surviving crematorium; that distinction is the inventory’s characterization.

Are Woodman Point’s ghosts real?

The official evidence supports describing the ghosts as folklore, not as established fact. A Western Australian school curriculum resource explains that staff may include “a few scary stories about ghosts believed to inhabit the Woodman Point site” during a Historical Night Tour, depending on students’ age and maturity. It does not identify a witness or document a particular apparition.

That makes ghost stories part of the site’s optional tour storytelling, but it does not verify that former staff or patients haunt its buildings. The distinction is important: the station’s history of isolation, illness and death is documented; supernatural claims remain stories.

Can you visit the former station?

The former station is now part of Woodman Point Recreation Camp. Official visitor information describes a heritage trail with interpretive signs and a display in the camp office. The Friends of Woodman Point Recreation Camp Inc. often conducts guided historical tours, but the school-focused Historical Night Tour description does not establish that a public ghost tour is regularly available.

Further reading on the station’s history

The camp’s heritage material names Ian Darroch’s Western Sentinel: A History of the Woodman Point Quarantine Station, Western Australia 1852–1979 as a site-specific history. It says the book is available for purchase from Woodman Point Recreation Camp, with proceeds supporting the Friends group’s conservation and heritage work.
