Wizards of the Coast did not announce a new permission to use generative AI for Magic cards. After community members flagged possible AI elements in marketing images, the company said it was rethinking how it works with vendors on marketing creative outside the game products. It reaffirmed its restriction on using generative AI to create final Magic products.
What changed after the marketing controversy?
On January 7, 2024, Wizards said community members had pointed out that recent marketing images “may have included elements of generative AI.” The company responded: “we are rethinking our process of how we work with vendors for our marketing creative.” The update focused on vendor-produced promotional work, including social-media marketing—not on changing the rules for making Magic products. Wizards’ January 7, 2024 update also said it wanted more transparency and disclosure, while acknowledging that generative-AI features were becoming standard in tools such as Photoshop and that it could not promise perfect detection or process control.
What is Wizards’ policy on AI in Magic products?
In a December 19, 2023 statement, Wizards said its internal guidelines required artists, writers, and other creatives contributing to the Magic trading card game to refrain from using generative AI tools to create final Magic products. The January 2024 statement reaffirmed that restriction; it was not a reversal or a new allowance for AI-generated card art.
How do product creation, marketing, and moderation differ?
Wizards’ public statements address three distinct uses of AI. They should not be treated as one policy decision.

| Context | Purpose and workflow | What Wizards has said |
|---|---|---|
| Final Magic products | Artists, writers, and creatives contribute to the game itself. | The December 2023 statement says contributors must not use generative AI to create final Magic products; the January 2024 update reaffirmed this restriction. |
| Marketing creative | Vendors produce promotional material outside the products, such as social-media marketing. | After concerns about images that may have included AI elements, Wizards said it was rethinking its vendor process and wanted greater transparency and disclosure. It also cautioned that perfect detection and process control cannot be promised. |
| SpellTable voice moderation | An AI tool helps moderate player speech; it is not being described as a way to make game art or products. | In March 2026, Wizards said its Magic generative-AI policy had not changed and described the moderation tool as a separate workflow in which human moderators make final decisions. |
What do the artist guidelines and detection efforts establish?
Wizards’ Generative AI art FAQ says Magic and Dungeons & Dragons have separate, non-public artist handbooks, and that contributors are expected to follow the handbook relevant to their work. The FAQ also notes that investigations may be inconclusive or handled internally without a public statement, so the absence of a public explanation does not establish what happened in an individual case.
The FAQ records a June 12, 2024 addition describing a pilot with Voight.ai to develop and deploy a customized AI-detection tool. Wizards said it was continuing to evaluate detection resources and wanted a human in the loop. That material does not establish the pilot’s current status or results, nor does it provide a detection-accuracy figure.

What did Wizards say in 2026?
In a March 16, 2026 announcement about a SpellTable voice-moderation pilot, Wizards wrote: “Note that our policy toward generative AI in Magic: The Gathering hasn’t changed (you can read it here), and this tool is simply meant to help our team moderate effectively.” The company described human moderators as making final decisions. This is evidence about a moderation workflow, not a change to the rules for creating Magic products. Read the SpellTable voice-moderation announcement.
