The best Will Smith science-fiction film for most viewers is Men in Black (1997). It combines his comic timing with an easy-to-follow alien-investigation premise and his partnership with Tommy Lee Jones. Independence Day and I, Robot follow, with I Am Legend as the most performance-driven pick. The order below is editorial judgment, not an aggregate score or a published critics’ ranking.

1. Men in Black (1997)
Sony Pictures describes the film this way: “Men in Black follows the exploits of agents Kay (Jones) and Jay (Smith), members of a top-secret organization established to monitor alien activity on Earth.” That single sentence explains the appeal. The premise is immediately legible, and the film’s comedy comes from the friction between a veteran and a newcomer. Smith’s timing and his pairing with Jones are the reasons the film is still the easiest recommendation in this list. The British Film Institute includes it in its Will Smith essential-films list, which supports its place as a defining title in his career. The BFI list is editorial context, not a ranking, so the position here rests on the criteria above.

2. Independence Day (1996)
This is the largest-scale film on the list: an alien-invasion adventure built for spectacle. Its official categorization is action, adventure, and science fiction. Smith’s lead role here was an early blockbuster showcase, and the BFI counts it among his essential films. It ranks second because the scale is impressive, but the emotional and comic payoff is less personal than in the first Men in Black.
3. I, Robot (2004)
Officially categorized as action, adventure, and science fiction, I, Robot is structured as a detective story. Its premise follows a detective investigating the death of a robot designer, amid a possible robot revolt. The film’s themes of robotics, artificial intelligence, and distrust of automated systems give it more intellectual texture than most action-hero vehicles, which is why it ranks above the sequels and above the later, less distinctive entries.

4. I Am Legend (2007)
This is the most intimate choice in the group. Smith carries a post-apocalyptic survival story whose atmosphere and emotional isolation are the main draw. The BFI praises the performance and the film’s early stretch. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus also names Smith’s performance as a strength while noting reservations about the special effects. Viewers who prefer character work to spectacle may rank this film higher than we do.
5. Men in Black 3 (2012)
Amblin confirms Men in Black 3 as a sequel released in 2012. Its main reason to watch is Agent J and the series’ time-travel variation, which adds a new angle to the partnership. The studio material used for this guide did not confirm an individual genre tag for the film, so it is listed here on franchise grounds. It sits at number five because it extends the world without matching the freshness of the original.

6. Men in Black II (2002)
Amblin identifies this as the first sequel to the 1997 original. It is the natural follow-up for readers who want more of the same partnership and the comic alien world. It ranks below the first film because a sequel has less novelty, and the first film’s premise is the one that makes the franchise work.
7. Gemini Man (2019)
Paramount Pictures presents the central conflict this way: “Retired hitman Henry Brogan (Smith) is forced on the run and finds himself hunted by his ultimate adversary – a younger clone of himself.” Ang Lee directs. The film is a science-fiction thriller released in 2019, and it is a good pick for viewers interested in the clone premise and action craft. Its story is less distinctive than the best of Smith’s genre work, which is why it sits in the lower half.

8. After Earth (2013)
Sony Pictures confirms the science-fiction setting and the film’s roles. The story follows Cypher and Kitai Raige, a father and son stranded on Earth long after humanity has left it. It is an interesting entry for completists and for readers curious about the Smith family pairing. The premise is more compelling than the film’s overall reputation, so it ranks last.

The strictest core of this list is the films whose official studio pages identify them as science fiction: Men in Black, Independence Day, I, Robot, After Earth, and Gemini Man. The two Men in Black sequels are included because the franchise documents them as sequels, even though the genre tags for those two films were not confirmed in the studio material used here.

Hancock (2008) is a boundary case. Sony describes it as a superhero action comedy rather than science fiction, so it is left out of a strict ranking. Readers using a broad speculative-fiction definition may want to add it to their own list.
