Takehiko Inoue’s Vagabond is his fictionalized account of the life of Miyamoto Musashi, the seventeenth-century swordsman. VIZ’s official series page identifies Inoue as the creator and describes the work in those terms. The series has not been formally ended, and the publisher’s listing does not present it as complete.

A May 2026 report from ComicBook.com describes the manga as being on indefinite hiatus since May 21, 2015. That is a secondary news report, not an official cancellation notice, and it is the most recent status description available. Because it is not from the creator or publisher, it should be read as reporting on the current state rather than as a binding announcement.
Hiatus, cancelled, and finished are different things

The clearest way to understand the situation is to place the known dates in order. Two of them come from different kinds of source, and they should not be merged.

The January 2015 post is a historical update. It documents a return to serialization that year, and it should not be read as a present-day promise. Inoue’s official site post is available at Takehiko Inoue’s official website, dated January 27, 2015.

Why no one can predict the ending
Several reasons make a forecast unreliable, and none of them can be resolved by reading tea leaves in the publisher’s catalogue or in fan discussion.
- No stated timetable. No official source provides a return date or an expected length for the remaining story.
- No completion commitment. The publisher and creator have not stated whether Inoue intends to finish the series.
- No explanation for the pause. No verified statement gives a reason for the hiatus, and any explanation offered online would be speculation.
- Silence is not a signal. A quiet period, the continued availability of volumes, or active fan debate does not indicate whether serialization will resume.
For those reasons, predictions about whether the ending will be published, or what it will contain, are not supported by the record.

Reading the existing volumes
The published work can still be read. VIZ currently lists Vagabond Definitive Edition, Vol. 1 and other volumes, along with a VIZBIG Edition volume, on its official series page. Readers who want to collect the series should check that page for current formats and availability, since listings can change.
Buying a volume gives access to the published story, but it does not change the unfinished status of the series. The format of an edition does not alter whether the narrative has concluded.

How to check for changes
The most reliable places to look for any new announcement are the two primary sources: the publisher’s series page and Inoue’s official website. Secondary coverage can lag behind official posts, so an article that repeats an old status should be checked against those pages before it is trusted.
- Check VIZ’s Vagabond series page for changes to listed editions or the series description.
- Check Inoue’s official website for dated creator posts.
- Treat any claim of a return date, cancellation, or ending that does not appear on one of those sources as unverified.
Until an official source states otherwise, the accurate answer to whether Vagabond will finish is that it is unknown.
