The top half showed the original AI video. The bottom half showed Smith actually eating spaghetti in exaggerated, comic ways. The original was made with ModelScope text-to-video, and its prompt later became a shorthand for judging how far AI video had come, though it was never a rigorous test.
What the original clip was
The 2023 clip was posted by Reddit user u/chaindrop to r/StableDiffusion on March 23, 2023, according to Know Your Meme. Its reported prompt was “Will Smith eating spaghetti,” run through ModelScope text2video. Know Your Meme reports that the clip reached Twitter several days after it first appeared on Reddit.
The 2024 parody compared with the original
Keep the two videos distinct when describing them. The 2023 clip is AI-generated. The lower half of Smith’s 2024 post features Smith himself, and the joke depends on that difference.
| Element | 2023 original | 2024 parody |
|---|---|---|
| Creator | Reddit user u/chaindrop | Will Smith, in his official Instagram post |
| Date | Posted March 23, 2023 | February 2024 (Ars Technica reported it on February 20, 2024) |
| Method | ModelScope text2video from a text prompt | Live footage of Smith eating spaghetti |
| Layout | Single AI-generated clip | Split screen: original AI video on top, real footage below |
| On-screen labels | Not stated in the reporting reviewed | “AI Video 1 year ago” (top) and “AI Video Now” (bottom) |
| Post caption | Not stated in the reporting reviewed | “This is getting out of hand!” |
What Smith did in the lower half
According to Ars Technica’s February 2024 report, the real footage was deliberately absurd. Among other bits, Smith slurped noodles, used his fingers, and nibbled on a friend’s hair. The reporting reviewed for this article includes no verified direct quotation from Smith about the parody, so the post caption is the only words of his that can be cited. Nothing in that record establishes a motive beyond the content of the video itself.

Why the prompt became a benchmark
The meme turned into a simple, memorable prompt that people reused whenever a new video-generation system appeared. TechCrunch called it an “unofficial” benchmark in a December 31, 2024 roundup of weird AI tests from that year. The same piece cautions that playful tests like this are not empirical and do not generalize. A model that handles this scene well has not shown it can generate other foods or actions well.
Was the original the most capable video tool at the time?
No, and it should not be described that way. Ars Technica reports that Runway’s Gen-2 had already produced superior results, although it was still in closed testing. The ModelScope clip stood out for two reasons: it came from an accessible open-weights model, and the result was funny.

Later follow-up: the Veo 3 attempt
Ars Technica revisited the prompt in a May 23, 2025 report. That piece described a later attempt using Google’s Veo 3 and noted an audio artifact that made the spaghetti sound crunchy. The article also restated the original history: the 2023 ModelScope clip came before Smith’s February 2024 parody. The 2025 report is useful as a dated follow-up. It does not show that the original story happened in 2025.
