Coverage describes choreography that suggested a kiss, but the reports do not confirm that lips made contact, and nothing published establishes what either performer privately intended.
Did Will Smith and India Martínez actually kiss?
The reports available do not establish that they did. Outlets describe a choreographed moment in which Smith leans toward Martínez as if to kiss, and she moves past him. Accounts differ on how the second moment played out, and The Standard’s February 26, 2025 report explicitly notes disagreement over whether a kiss occurred. The most defensible description is a staged near-kiss, not a kiss.

What happened on stage
The Independent, reporting on February 26, 2025 by Lydia Spencer-Elliott, described the performance of “First Love” at the Miami awards show and characterized the apparent kiss attempt as choreography. In its account, Smith leans in, Martínez walks past him, and later she leans toward him.
Yahoo Entertainment, also dated February 26, 2025, describes the same two close moments: Martínez moves past Smith during the first, and the pair repeat the moment later in the performance. The distinction matters because the second moment is the one reports handle least consistently.

#1 Best Overall
- Shrink-wrapped
NDTV’s February 27, 2025 report describes the close staging and quotes a caption Smith posted with a shared clip of the performance: “I want that first passion. I want them first hugs. I want them hard cries. I want that FIRST LOVE.” That caption is promotional song language. It describes the song’s theme and does not explain the choreography.
How outlets labeled the moment
Coverage used several labels for the same visual, and they carry different claims:
Rank #2
- “Appears to kiss” describes what the audience seemed to see without asserting the outcome.
- “Fake kiss” or “pretending to kiss” frames the moment as a performance device. The Standard used the second phrasing on February 26, 2025.
- “Stage bit” or “choreography” is how The Independent framed the interaction.
For accuracy, “a staged near-kiss during choreography” is the most precise description the reports support. Phrases such as “they kissed” go beyond the evidence.
Martínez’s post and the translation
Yahoo Entertainment reported that Martínez shared backstage footage with lyrics from the song and the Spanish caption “Otra perspectiva, misma pasión!!” That line is Yahoo’s reported translation: “Another perspective, same passion!!” The post is a light-hearted promotional note about the performance. It does not address the kiss directly, and the reports do not include a statement from Smith, Martínez, or the awards organizer about intent or about whether contact occurred.

How audiences reacted
Social-media reaction was mixed. Outlets quoted commenters who called the moment inappropriate or cringe, and others who described it as a joke or part of the act. These are anecdotal comments selected by the outlets. They are not a poll, and they do not represent a consensus of audience opinion, either critical or amused.
Relationship background
The Indian Express discussed the reaction in the context of Smith’s public relationship with Jada Pinkett Smith. That background is the outlet’s framing. The coverage does not show that Pinkett Smith responded to the performance, and nothing reviewed establishes what she thought of it. Any reading of the moment as a comment on their relationship is speculation.

What is and is not established
- Established: Smith and Martínez performed “First Love” at the 37th Premio Lo Nuestro Awards in Miami on February 20, 2025, and the choreography included close, near-kiss moments.
- Not established: whether lips touched, the performers’ private intent, and any statement from either performer or the organizer about the moment.
- Limited to a few days of reporting: the sources reviewed are dated February 26 and 27, 2025. Later statements, if any exist, are not reflected here.
The stage moment is a performance choice, and the reporting supports describing it as one. It does not support claims about a real-life romance.
Publication date context: this article reflects coverage published in late February 2025 and is not a record of any developments after that period.

Reading the moment as a performance
Choreographed near-kisses are a long-standing staging device in music performance: they generate a beat of tension for the audience without requiring any real contact. Viewers who read the moment as a bit are reacting to exactly that structure, while viewers who objected were responding to the visual of a near-kiss between two performers who are not publicly a couple. Both responses rest on what the audience could see, which is the one thing the reports agree on.
Because the lyrics and caption are about first love, the choreography reads as a theme-driven gesture rather than a statement about the two people performing it.
If you are looking for the performance itself, the reports name the song and the event but do not identify a particular physical edition, official broadcast link, or replay source, so this article does not recommend one.
