The Season 1 finale of House of the Dragon refers to them, and TIME’s July 2024 dragon guide describes them by their familiar book names. Each carries a short, distinguishing trait. Season 2 then places a wild dragon in the Vale, but the link to Sheepstealer is an inference from the book, not something the cited reporting says the show confirms.
The three wild dragons of Dragonstone
The Cannibal
The Cannibal is said to feast on other dragons and their eggs. The Ringer’s June 2024 guide gives this as the creature’s defining trait and states that its primer draws largely on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. Because the description comes from a secondary summary of the book, treat it as background lore rather than a detail the series is shown to spell out.
The Sheepstealer
The Sheepstealer hunts sheep, which is where its name comes from. The Ringer’s June 2024 guide gives this trait. Its book background places its lair on Dragonstone, a point that matters for the Season 2 storyline discussed below.
The Grey Ghost
The Grey Ghost is the elusive one. According to The Ringer’s June 2024 guide, it is rarely spotted and feeds on fish. That is the full extent of the trait the cited sources give, so do not extend it into claims about where or when it appears.

The three compared
The table below lines up the three dragons on the axes that the sources actually cover. Where a cited guide says nothing, the cell says so.
| Dragon | Feeding or prey association | How easy it is to find | Where the detail comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cannibal | Other dragons and their eggs (The Ringer, June 2024) | Not stated in the cited guide | Book lore, as summarized by The Ringer’s guide, which draws largely on Fire & Blood |
| Sheepstealer | Sheep (The Ringer, June 2024) | Not stated in the cited guide | Book lore: Dragonmont on Dragonstone, per A Wiki of Ice and Fire, citing Fire & Blood. The Vale appearance in Season 2 is an inference in TIME’s July 2024 report. |
| Grey Ghost | Fish (The Ringer, June 2024) | Rarely spotted (The Ringer, June 2024) | Book lore, as summarized by The Ringer’s guide |
The Vale dragon in Season 2
In the Season 2 Vale storyline, Rhaena finds the remains of burnt sheep, and Jeyne Arryn tells her that a wild dragon is already in the area. TIME’s July 2024 report reads the creature as Sheepstealer, based on the name and the sheep remains. The same report notes that Rhaena has not yet claimed the dragon in the episodes it covers.

That makes the Sheepstealer identification strongly implied rather than confirmed. Unless an episode explicitly names the creature, readers should treat the link as an inference drawn from the name and the evidence on screen.
Book history versus the show’s Vale placement
A Wiki of Ice and Fire, which cites Fire & Blood, describes the Sheepstealer as a wild dragon that lived at Dragonmont on Dragonstone and hunted sheep in the surrounding region. In that account, Nettles tamed it by repeatedly leaving sheep out for it. These details belong to the book’s history, not to the Rhaena storyline in the show.

The two accounts therefore differ on location. The book places Sheepstealer on Dragonstone, while the series’ Season 2 thread places a wild dragon in the Vale. The sources do not explain that difference, so read the Vale placement as a change from the book’s background rather than as a confirmed Sheepstealer story.
What the sources do and do not establish
- Established: the three names, the traits given for each in The Ringer’s June 2024 guide, and the Season 2 Vale thread as reported by TIME in July 2024.
- Not established: whether any of the three appears in later seasons, what happens to the Vale dragon, whether Rhaena ever claims it, and what becomes of the Sheepstealer.
- Not established: the size, age or fighting strength of the three dragons. The cited sources give no basis for ranking them on those points.
The reporting behind these points dates from June and July 2024 and covers the first two seasons. Developments after that are outside what it supports.

Where to read more
The series is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a point Warner Bros. Discovery’s official press material confirms. For the fuller history of these dragons, read the book directly, because the names and traits reported here come largely through secondary guides. Expect the adaptation to differ from the book in places, as the Vale placement above shows. A Wiki of Ice and Fire is a useful secondary lore reference for Sheepstealer’s book history, but check it against the book when exact wording matters.
