CDs are likely to remain a useful physical music format, but current U.S. industry figures do not support treating CDs broadly—or a typical copy—as a future investment. In 2025, CD sales and wholesale revenue fell year over year, even as total physical music revenue rose, led by vinyl. A particular disc’s resale value depends on its exact edition, condition and evidence from completed sales, not the format’s overall popularity.
What does “valuable” mean?
The question can mean three different things: whether CDs will remain available and wanted as a format, whether they are useful to own and play, or whether a particular copy will command a high resale price. Industry sales figures can help describe demand for the format; they do not establish the future price of an individual disc.
For collectors, a meaningful item-level assessment starts with the exact release and pressing, the copy’s condition and completeness, and completed transactions for the same edition. A seller’s asking price is not proof that buyers have paid that amount. The available industry reports do not provide verified resale histories or price estimates for specific CDs.
What the latest U.S. figures say about CDs
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reports U.S. industry wholesale value, net after returns, and unit counts. In its 2025 year-end report, CD units fell from 33.3 million in 2024 to 29.5 million in 2025, while CD wholesale value fell from $338.9 million to $312.4 million. That represents year-over-year declines of 11.6% in units and 7.8% in value. These are industry figures, not consumer resale prices or a forecast for an individual collection. Why total physical music growth does not mean CDs are appreciating
Total U.S. physical music wholesale value rose 5.0% in 2025, from $1,315.5 million to $1,381.0 million. That overall increase came while CD revenue declined; vinyl led the growth. Vinyl reached 46.8 million units and $1,042.9 million in wholesale value in 2025, compared with 43.4 million units and $954.4 million in 2024. These numbers describe different formats’ aggregate sales over a defined period. They cannot tell you what a used CD will sell for, whether a particular edition will become scarce, or how its price may change. Nor does growth in total physical music revenue establish that CDs themselves are gaining value.

How to judge a CD’s potential resale value
- Identify the exact edition. Record the release and pressing details so you are comparing the same item, not just another album with the same title.
- Assess the copy. Check its condition and whether the original components are present; condition and completeness affect whether a comparison is meaningful.
- Look for completed sales. Compare transactions for that exact edition. Treat unsold listings and seller asking prices as offers, not evidence of a completed sale.
Without those item-specific details and credible completed transactions, a broad market trend is not enough to estimate a CD’s resale value.
Should you buy CDs as an investment?
Do not assume that renewed interest in physical music guarantees appreciation. The latest RIAA figures show that CDs remain a substantial U.S. format, but both their reported unit sales and wholesale value declined in 2025. They are aggregate industry measures and do not establish future returns for a particular disc. Buy CDs primarily because you want to listen to, own or collect them; regard any resale gain as uncertain unless evidence for the exact edition supports it.

How to read older comparisons with vinyl
Comparisons need a clear geography, period and measurement basis. For example, RIAA’s U.S. mid-year 2024 report recorded $237 million in CD wholesale revenue and 17 million CD units for the first half of that year, versus $740 million and 24 million units for vinyl.
