The 2025 Lilo & Stitch remake shifts more of the antagonist role to Jumba and leaves Captain Gantu out. The change has a clear dramatic logic: Jumba created Stitch, so making him the pursuer ties the danger directly to Stitch’s identity and to the story’s questions about purpose, responsibility, and family. But a more personal setup does not automatically make a more fully developed relationship.
What changed between the 2002 original and the remake?
In the 2002 animated film, Jumba is Stitch’s creator and joins the pursuit after Stitch escapes; Captain Gantu enters later as a more conventional threat. The 2025 remake omits Gantu and gives Jumba more of the antagonist function. Director Dean Fleischer Camp advocated removing Gantu and shifting that work to Jumba, according to CinemaBlend’s interview coverage. D23’s character guide identifies Jumba as Stitch’s creator.
The remake is a 2025 film directed by Fleischer Camp. Disney’s official film page lists the film and its cast; the company’s production feature notes that Chris Sanders, co-director of the original, returned to voice Stitch and that people involved in the original took part in the remake’s development.
Why did the director think Jumba was a better antagonist?
Fleischer Camp said Gantu’s arrival in the original made the story more conventional. Jumba, by contrast, is personally connected to Stitch because he made him. As quoted in CinemaBlend’s interview coverage, the director called Jumba “A terrible delinquent father figure, but father figure nonetheless to Stitch.” He also argued that the main antagonist should express the film’s theme, rather than simply function as a distant “big bad” who arrives and shoots lasers.

That rationale makes the change more than a way to simplify the cast. A creator pursuing his creation puts Stitch’s origin and identity at the center of the conflict. The threat is not just an outside force: it comes from the person who designed Stitch for a purpose. That gives the story a direct route into the question of whether Stitch is defined only by what he was made to do.
What does the choice gain—and what might it lose?
A closer link between conflict and theme
Putting Jumba in the antagonist role makes the central threat more personally bound to Stitch. It can also bring responsibility into sharper focus: Jumba is not merely chasing an alien experiment but confronting the consequences of creating one. This is the structural strength of Fleischer Camp’s explanation. The choice connects the antagonist to the protagonist’s backstory instead of introducing a separate pursuer later.

Less room for a relationship to change
The same premise offers a potential emotional arc: a creator who begins as a pursuer could become an ally, giving the film space to show the relationship changing. TIME’s assessment of the adaptation argues that the remake gives this pivotal creator-and-experiment bond only a sketch. That is one reviewer’s criticism, not a measure of critical consensus. It points to the key distinction: a relationship can be central to the setup yet still receive too little development on screen.
A shift in the film’s overall balance
The Jumba decision also belongs to a broader rearrangement of the story. The Associated Press review, published May 20, 2025, describes the remake as retaining the sisters-and-family core while adding more action and changing plot details. That review is an individual critical judgment, but it helps put the antagonist change in context: the film is balancing family drama, alien pursuit, and spectacle differently from the 2002 version.

How to judge whether the change works
Fleischer Camp’s explanation makes the adaptation’s intention clear, but viewers can judge the result on its own terms. Four questions get to the trade-off:
- Personal connection: Is the danger meaningfully tied to Stitch’s creation and identity, or does it feel like a separate chase plot?
- Thematic function: Does Jumba’s role clarify the story’s questions about purpose and responsibility?
- Character development: Does the film give Jumba and Stitch enough time for their relationship to change convincingly?
- Story balance: Does concentrating the antagonist role make the story more focused, or does it leave less room for the sisters’ family story and the original’s ensemble dynamic?
The adaptation’s case is strongest on personal connection: Jumba has a built-in relationship to Stitch that a later-arriving pursuer does not. Whether that connection becomes a satisfying character arc is a separate question, and one that TIME’s criticism brings into focus.
