The daily syndicated version ended in 1982, and Rayburn later described the period that followed as an “involuntary” retirement. He returned to host the Match Game segment of the NBC Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour in 1983–84, and he was not the host of ABC’s 1990 revival. For that revival, Rayburn said the network wanted a younger host after his real age became public. Because “leave Match Game” can refer to either of two separate events, the answer depends on which one you mean.
The 1982 end of the syndicated show
The Los Angeles Times obituary published in 1999 places the daily syndicated Match Game in the years 1975 to 1982. It says that after the program was dropped, Rayburn entered what he called “involuntary” retirement. The phrase matters: Rayburn presented the end of the show as something that happened to him, not as a decision he made to leave a program that was still running.
The sources do not document the executive reasoning behind the 1982 cancellation. No production-side account or network record in the available material explains why the syndicated run stopped, so any fuller explanation would be speculation.
What Rayburn said about the aftermath
The same 1999 obituary quotes Rayburn on the years that followed: “Ever since ‘Entertainment Tonight’ started giving my age when I turned 68, I haven’t been getting anything to do.” The quote links his later career difficulties to his publicly known age, but it is his account. It does not establish a specific decision by any particular employer.

The 1990 ABC revival and the age explanation
The clearest account of the revival’s casting comes from a 1990 Los Angeles Times interview published while ABC’s version was in development. In it, Rayburn said that shortly before the revival was announced, Entertainment Tonight wished him a happy birthday and gave his real age, 72. In his telling, once ABC learned his age, it wanted a younger man and hired a younger comic.
Rayburn’s recollection of the network’s response is the only source for that account. The article records what he said. It does not independently establish ABC’s reasoning, and no ABC document in the available material confirms it.

The quote Rayburn attributed to ABC
In the 1990 interview, Rayburn recalled the network’s reaction this way: “We want a young man. He may have a heart attack.” Present this as Rayburn’s recollection of what ABC said after learning his age, not as a verbatim statement from the network.
The ratings figure in the interview
Rayburn also recalled that Match Game reached a 14.9 share in 1975. This is his recollection in the 1990 interview, not a ratings measurement that the sources independently verify.

| Question | 1982 end of the syndicated run | 1990 ABC revival |
|---|---|---|
| What happened | The daily syndicated program was dropped | ABC’s revival went ahead with a different host |
| Rayburn’s description | “Involuntary” retirement (1999 Los Angeles Times obituary) | ABC wanted a younger man after learning his age (1990 Los Angeles Times interview) |

What the record can and cannot settle
- The end date of the syndicated run (1982) and Rayburn’s description of the following retirement come from the 1999 Los Angeles Times obituary.
- His 1983–84 return to the NBC version comes from the Television Academy’s chronology, which itself draws on Wikipedia.
- His explanation of the 1990 casting decision comes from his own 1990 interview. The sources do not independently verify ABC’s motive.
- The sources quote different ages for Rayburn (68 in the 1999 obituary, 72 in the 1990 interview) and do not explain the difference.
The short answer, then, is that Rayburn’s syndicated run ended in 1982 and he later described that as involuntary. The explanation for his absence from the 1990 revival is his own account, which he attributed to ABC’s response to his age.
The show continued without him. The Television Academy’s chronology lists Ross Shafer as presenter for 1990–91.
