Jabba the Hut did not make Princess Leia take off her clothes. In Return of the Jedi (1983), he forces her into a revealing slave-girl costume, usually called the gold metal bikini, and keeps her beside him as a captive. The motive the story gives is control: he has captured her and wants her visibly under his power. The scene reverses later, when Leia uses the chain that ties her to him to choke him.
What the scene actually shows
The question’s premise is the first thing to correct. Leia is dressed, not undressed. StarWars.com’s official character profile for Princess Leia describes Jabba making her wear a slave-girl outfit and remain at his side, and nothing in that account describes her removing her clothing. The costume itself is described in StarWars.com’s costume feature as a gold metal bikini with a two-piece skirt and ankle boots.
Why Jabba puts her in the costume
The story’s logic is straightforward. Leia’s captivity follows a sequence of events:
- The disguise. Leia poses as the bounty hunter Boushh to bring Chewbacca to Jabba’s palace.
- The rescue. She secretly frees Han Solo.
- The recognition. Jabba recognizes her, imprisons Han again, and forces Leia into the outfit.
- The display. She remains at his side in the costume, where she has no say in what she wears.
Within the film, the costume works as a marker of captivity. Jabba is not dressing her for her own benefit; he is keeping a prisoner visibly under his control.

The reversal: the chain
The power dynamic changes in the execution sequence. The chain connecting Leia to Jabba is the same restraint that marks her as his prisoner, and she uses it to choke him. Carrie Fisher later described the episode in a 2015 interview quoted by StarWars.com with a deliberately comic edge: “A giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it.”
Where the costume design came from
StarWars.com’s 2016 coverage of the Star Wars and the Power of Costume exhibit reports that the bikini drew some inspiration from slave-girl characters portrayed in earlier films. That is a documented screen-history influence. It is not a complete account of why the costume was designed as it was. The official material does not include a definitive statement from George Lucas, the costume designer, or the director explaining the full reasoning behind the look.

Where documented fact ends and interpretation begins
Three kinds of statement are worth keeping apart:
- What the story says: Jabba forces Leia into the outfit while holding her captive. This is established by the film’s plot and StarWars.com’s character profile.
- What the costume history says: the bikini was inspired partly by earlier slave-girl imagery. This comes from StarWars.com’s exhibit coverage.
- What the scene means: readings of the costume as a statement about sexualized display or power are interpretations. Official sources do not confirm them as the filmmakers’ intent, and viewers do not all read the scene the same way.
Fisher’s own characterization of Leia points toward agency rather than helplessness. In the 2021 oral history Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga – The Official Collector’s Edition, excerpted by StarWars.com, she says: “I was not actually a damsel in distress, I was a distressing damsel!” That remark describes how she understood the character. It is not a statement about why the costume was designed.
In short, the scene is about captivity and control, and Leia’s escape from that control is the story’s answer to it.
