Fruit of the Loom says a cornucopia has never appeared in its logo, but many people confidently remember one. The confusion has a paper-trail explanation: wording that included “Cornucopia” appeared in a searchable code associated with a 1973 trademark filing, not in the logo drawing itself. Researchers have documented the shared false memory, but have not established one definitive reason people have it.
Did the Fruit of the Loom logo ever have a cornucopia?
Fruit of the Loom’s FAQ says the cornucopia was never part of the company’s logo. The company also addresses a frequently cited 1973 trademark application: it says the application concerned a trademark design for laundry detergent, the mark was registered in 1974, and the registration expired in 1988.
The key distinction is between the picture submitted as a mark and the searchable description attached to it. The company says a cropped image shared online highlighted a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office design-code description—“Baskets of fruit; Containers of fruit; Cornucopia (horn of plenty)”—but omitted the actual drawing. According to Fruit of the Loom, those terms were assigned by a trademark examiner as generic image-search terms; they do not show that the submitted logo contained a cornucopia.
That is the company’s account of the filing, rather than independent proof of every historical logo or garment label. The FAQ also characterizes images said to show a cornucopia on neck labels as creatively altered or counterfeit.

Why does the memory feel so convincing?
A University of Chicago study examined what researchers call the “Visual Mandela Effect”: people independently choosing or recalling the same incorrect details in familiar images. A July 18, 2022 report on the study says researchers tested 40 icons, including the Fruit of the Loom logo. Participants could select the correct logo, a version with a cornucopia, or one with a plate beneath the fruit.
The study documents that the cornucopia version is a recurring false visual memory, but it does not settle why that specific image sticks. The researchers found that simply looking at the wrong part of an image was not enough to explain the effect, and familiar associations—or “schema”—did not explain every example.

Fruit is often associated with harvest imagery, which could make a horn of plenty feel like a plausible detail to add to a fruit logo. But that is an interpretation, not a demonstrated cause. One researcher noted that participants selected a cornucopia over a plate even though plates are more commonly associated with fruit—a result that cautions against treating one tidy association as the full explanation.

The design-code wording offers a concrete reason the mistaken memory can seem confirmed: a person searching for evidence may encounter “Cornucopia” beside the company name and infer that it described the logo’s picture. The company says the phrase was an examiner-assigned search code, while the drawing itself did not depict the horn of plenty. The distinction is between a searchable text label and the image being registered.

Online discussion has its own traceable history. Know Your Meme’s account, updated March 29, 2023, identifies an August 22, 2018 Reddit post explicitly describing the suspected Fruit of the Loom Mandela Effect. It recounts later debate involving the trademark description, a parody in the film The Ant Bully, and Frank Wess’s 1973 album Flute of the Loom. That account helps track how the claim circulated online; it is not primary evidence about the company’s logo archive, and the 2018 post should not be mistaken for the first time anyone had the memory.

What can be said with confidence
- Fruit of the Loom says its logo has never included a cornucopia.
- The company says the cornucopia wording in the 1973 filing was a searchable design code, not an element shown in the submitted drawing.
- Researchers have documented that people share a confident memory of a cornucopia version of the logo.
- The available study does not identify one definitive cause for that memory, and online meme histories do not establish what the company’s historical logo looked like.
