Tim Cook attended a private White House screening of Melania on January 24, 2026, but no reviewed report gives his personal reason for going. The available evidence supports calling him an invited guest at a film preview; claims that he went to curry favor, do business, or signal political support are speculation.
What happened at the screening?
Donald and Melania Trump hosted a private screening of Melania at the White House on Saturday night, January 24, 2026, according to The Washington Post. Photos and videos of Cook among the guests circulated the following day. The Associated Press also reported his attendance, describing the gathering as a black-tie preview. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and former boxer Mike Tyson were among the other prominent guests.

The White House event was not the film’s public premiere. It was a private preview ahead of a later premiere at the Kennedy Center and the theatrical release, as the Associated Press account distinguishes.
Did Cook explain why he went?
No reviewed report quotes Cook explaining his decision, and the official transcript of remarks about the film contains statements by Donald and Melania Trump, not an explanation from Cook. The transcript is available through GovInfo. Without a statement from Cook, the reason beyond his attendance as a guest at the screening is unknown.

Was the event political, or was it a film promotion?
It was a private screening connected to the film’s promotion, hosted by the president and first lady. That setting can invite political interpretation, but it does not establish Cook’s individual intent. The Atlantic discussed the attendance of Cook and other technology executives as part of a broader pattern of tech leaders engaging with Trump; that is analysis of the wider context, not evidence of Cook’s motive: The Atlantic’s analysis.
The timing also drew attention because Alex Pretti was fatally shot in Minneapolis on January 24. The Washington Post reported that the screening had been scheduled before the shooting. The timing therefore does not, by itself, show that Cook attended in response to the death or its political aftermath.
