Wil Willis did not give a public reason when he left Forged in Fire. In a later interview on the Cleared Hot podcast, he described several pressures that came together: a schedule that kept him away from his wife, family, and home; frustration that the show had become stale and left no room for his own projects; his wife’s pregnancy and health during that period; and clashes with producers, especially during Beat the Judges. He also said he contributed to some of those clashes himself.
A 2024 article suggested that the birth of his son was the decisive factor. That is that publisher’s interpretation, not a statement from Willis, and it should be read as one explanation among several rather than the answer.
What Willis has said about leaving
Willis’s account is the most direct evidence available, and it is retrospective. He does not describe one moment that ended his time on the show. He describes a set of pressures that built up over his years as host. Each factor below is his own account, not an independently confirmed production record.
The schedule and time away from home
Willis said the show took up a great deal of his time and kept him away from his wife, his family, and his home. He described filming as stressful and physically demanding, with long days on set and extended periods of standing. He said he began filming the series in April 2015 and hosted seven seasons. For many hosts, that kind of load is the main reason to step back, and Willis’s account treats it as one of the main reasons for his decision.

Creative frustration
Willis also said he was frustrated that he could not get his own projects moving while he was committed to the series. He felt the Forged in Fire role was becoming stale. This is a different kind of pressure from the schedule: it concerns what he could do with his career, not just how many hours it took.
His wife’s pregnancy
Willis said his wife was pregnant during this period and began having seizures in the third trimester. He presented this as part of the family context in which he was weighing his work. The detail is personal and comes only from his account, so it should be attributed to him directly.

Conflicts with producers
Willis described personality conflicts and clashes with producers, particularly during the production of Beat the Judges, the show’s spin-off competition. He did not blame the producers alone. He said he pushed some of those disputes himself.
Where the son’s birth explanation comes from
Willis’s son, Flash Orion Willis, was born in March 2020. A 2024 article described that birth as a likely influence on the decision, because of the show’s filming demands, and placed the exit between the end of season seven and season eight. Willis did not publicly give a reason at the time, so the article’s link between the birth and his departure is an inference. It is reasonable to consider, but it is not the same kind of evidence as his own description.

His career before and beyond the show
The New York Film Academy’s alumni biography describes Willis as an actor, writer, and former Forged in Fire host. Its published account of his background is:
- Graduated from NYFA’s Los Angeles campus in 2014.
- Joined the Army in 1993 and served in A Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, through 1998.
- Cross-trained to the Air Force.
- Received the Sikorsky Rescue Award in 2001 for actions while stationed in Iceland.
- Served as a pararescueman until August 2008.
These dates are NYFA’s account and have not been independently checked against military records for this article.

How his life has changed since
The public record of Willis’s life after the show is thin. A December 21, 2020 episode listing for the B3F podcast calls him the former host of Forged in Fire. It notes that he and his wife ran a production company called Monkey Fist Films, and says the conversation covered his military service, movies, raising children, and patriotism. That listing confirms public activity in the period around his departure. It does not describe his work or family life today.
For that reason, this article cannot verify a current project, his current marital or family status, or any return to the show. If he has spoken about those things more recently, that material is not part of the record used here. Readers should treat any claim about his present work with caution unless it comes from a current interview or an official source.
