David Caruso left NYPD Blue after its first season amid a reported salary impasse and growing opportunities to pursue films. He later said the series’ demanding schedule had worn him down, but that he wanted to find a way to do both television and movies. The public accounts differ on the private negotiations, so no single explanation is established as the whole story.

What happened before Caruso left?

The departure took shape during preparations for NYPD Blue’s second season, soon after the show had become a hit. In August 1994, The Washington Post reported a salary impasse between Caruso and the producers. One account said ABC was prepared to offer $80,000 per episode while Caruso was reportedly seeking $100,000; it also noted concern that a higher salary could create friction with the ensemble cast. The Washington Post’s report

A separate Post story described Caruso’s existing salary as $35,000 per episode and the reported request as $100,000. Those accounts do not agree on his prior pay, so neither figure should be treated as a settled contract amount. The Washington Post’s other report

Money was not the only issue described at the time. Reporting also connected Caruso’s negotiations with his desire for freedom to take other projects as feature-film opportunities grew, including after his work on Kiss of Death.

Why did Caruso say he wanted to leave?

He wanted to pursue films

In a 1995 Los Angeles Times interview, Caruso said movies had long been his career goal. He described film roles arriving when he felt he had a chance to lead features, and characterized leaving the series as a gamble that nevertheless felt compelling. Los Angeles Times, March 12, 1995

He said the schedule was exhausting

Caruso described the show’s pace as draining, saying, “I had four days off in 40 weeks.” He attributed any loss of temper to exhaustion. That is his own account of the workload, not an independently verified production schedule.

He said he hoped to do both

Caruso said he and his representatives tried to work out a way for him to stay on NYPD Blue while making films. One idea, he recalled, was to shoot scenes early and insert them into later episodes. He said, “Contrary to popular belief, I was extremely disappointed that we couldn’t work it out, because I wanted to do both.”

How did Steven Bochco describe the split?

In his later memoir, Truth Is a Total Defense, series co-creator Steven Bochco recalled a more strained working relationship. As reported by TVLine, Bochco described Caruso as difficult to work with, said he wanted to be a movie star, and recounted requests beyond salary, including Fridays off and other accommodations. These are Bochco’s retrospective views, not neutral findings about the negotiations. TVLine’s account of Bochco’s memoir

Bochco had also told the Los Angeles Times that “It was always clear that David’s heart was in the movies.” That was Bochco’s recollection of Caruso’s ambitions, rather than a statement by Caruso himself. Los Angeles Times, March 12, 1995

Was Caruso fired, or did he choose to leave?

The public record described here does not establish a single definitive private motive or settle every term of the negotiations. Contemporary reporting makes a salary breakdown the clearest reported trigger; Caruso later emphasized movie ambitions and exhaustion, while Bochco’s memoir stressed difficult behavior and broader demands. The accounts overlap on the collision between the series and Caruso’s film ambitions, but differ in emphasis.

The result was quick on screen: Detective John Kelly was written out early in season two, with the third episode identified as Caruso’s write-out in the 1995 Los Angeles Times account. Jimmy Smits joined the cast as the replacement.
