Alicia Keys was accused by Mashonda Tifrere of getting involved with Swizz Beatz while he was still married to Tifrere and of breaking up her family. Beatz denied in 2008 that Keys had any role in his separation; Keys later said he and Tifrere had been apart before their relationship began. Tifrere disputed that account. What did “stealing” mean in this dispute?
“Stealing” was a colloquial way of describing Tifrere’s accusation that Keys began dating Beatz while Tifrere was still his wife. Tifrere also accused Keys of breaking up her family. These were allegations about the relationship’s timing and its effect on the family, not a legal finding that Keys caused the marriage to end.

Beatz’s 2008 denial
In a statement to Us Weekly reproduced by Fox News on September 15, 2008, Beatz said Keys was not connected to his marital circumstances or his decision with Tifrere to separate. He called Keys his friend and said: “I can no longer ignore the harmful rumors, that my friend Alicia Keys is in any way linked to my marital circumstances or to the decision that [my wife] Mashonda and I have made to separate,” (Fox News).

That statement records Beatz’s denial at the time; it does not independently establish when Keys and Beatz began their relationship.
Keys’s account and Tifrere’s rebuttal
In 2012, Keys told Jet that she and Beatz got together after he and Tifrere had been apart for a while: “[They] were apart for some time before we ever got together.” TheGrio reported the statement and Tifrere’s response: “No, we were not ‘apart’ or separated, and that’s just a fact that can be proven in many ways.” (theGrio).

Those accounts directly conflict over whether Beatz and Tifrere had separated before Keys and Beatz became involved. The reporting presents what each person said, rather than independently resolving the disagreement.
What the dates establish—and what they do not
A broad timeline places the relationship’s beginning around Beatz and Tifrere’s 2008 split and says their divorce was finalized in 2010. But a reported “split” does not answer Tifrere’s specific objection that they were not separated when Keys and Beatz got together. The available timeline is secondary reporting, not proof of the precise relationship start date or the couple’s private circumstances (Us Weekly).

That later cooperation offers context for how the family’s relationships changed, but does not resolve the original dispute about timing.
