Why These Women Want to Be TikTok’s “Cool Aunt”

The TikTok "cool aunt" trend contrasts a conventional adult timeline with a self-chosen life. Here is how the format works, what two featured women say, and what the coverage does not establish.

The TikTok “cool aunt” trend is a video format that sets a conventional adult timeline against a life built on the creator’s own choices, then labels that second path “Plan B: cool aunt.” POPSUGAR’s September 25, 2025 feature by Emma Glassman-Hughes, which profiled two women who took part, presents autonomy and self-direction as the core appeal. You do not need a niece or nephew to join in. The identity is about how a person lives, not about family relationships.

How the format works

The videos follow a repeatable structure. As reported by POPSUGAR, a typical clip moves through four beats:

  1. It opens with an on-screen list of milestones, such as “Plan A: married by 25, homeowner by 27, kids by 30.”
  2. When the music changes, the creator shows what she has done instead.
  3. The activities and accomplishments are presented as the alternative schedule.
  4. The second path is labelled “Plan B: cool aunt.”

The contrast is the point. Plan A is a sequence with deadlines attached; Plan B is a set of experiences with no fixed order. The format is sometimes also called “Plan B,” which is the shorter label most viewers will recognise.

What the examples show, and what they do not

The creators in the article fill Plan B with activities that are visibly outside a standard milestone checklist:

  • Travel and hiking
  • Surfing and bungee jumping
  • A sports car
  • Red-carpet appearances

These are examples of what a creator might show, not a checklist a participant must complete, and the article does not offer a universal definition of the identity. The audio used in the featured videos was described as a Kanye song remixed with a track by Nemzzz. That describes the sound at the time of the September 2025 reporting. It is not a current trending pick, and the sound may have changed since.

Two creators, two routes into the trend

Hershy: a Los Angeles college student with a family precedent

Hershy is a Los Angeles college student whose last name the article does not publish. She joined the trend after turning 21. Her mother married at 21, and Hershy frames herself as the first woman in her family with meaningful choice around marriage and children. The path she was once given was study, marriage by 26, children, and caring for family. She is aiming for a career in dance, music, fashion, or content creation. Among her “cool aunt” milestones she counts hosting a Diwali-Halloween party and flying alone from Los Angeles to New York Fashion Week.

Kelsey Kawamoto: a digital nomad who redefined the plan

Kelsey Kawamoto is described in the article as a 33-year-old digital nomad based in Denver. She once pictured a conventional life as a married homeowner with children. She now puts wealth-building through flexible work first, alongside travel and whatever makes her happy. She has two nephews in real life, and her aunt role, as she describes it, is to help them live authentically rather than by social expectation.

In their own words

These are the statements the article attributes to each woman, reproduced as reported:

  • Hershy: “I feel at this age that my goals are limitless versus when I was younger.”
  • Hershy: “Cool aunt is an energy!”
  • Hershy: “Being a ‘cool aunt’ simply means being a mature girl who lives her best life on her own terms.”
  • Kawamoto: “I want to travel as much as possible and spend my free time doing the things that make me happiest.”
  • Kawamoto: “I will know I have achieved my mission as a ‘cool aunt’ when my nephews live life authentically and not just by what they think they should do because of societal norms.”

Read side by side, the two accounts share a concern with autonomy, but they reach it from different places. Hershy’s account is about breaking from a family expectation that was set before she had a say. Kawamoto’s is about replacing a plan she once held with one built around money, mobility and enjoyment, and about what she wants for her nephews. Neither is offered as a template.

What this coverage does not establish

  • It is two individual accounts, not representative evidence about women’s preferences or about why women in general choose this path.
  • It gives no population-level data on how many people take part or how far the trend has spread. No figures are offered.
  • It includes no expert or official statements about the trend. Everything comes from the creators and the on-screen format.
  • It does not show that all women, all child-free people, or all participants share these motivations.
  • It mentions broader pressures around parenthood and gender, but a single feature does not substantiate population-level explanations for them.
  • It is a snapshot. The reporting is dated September 25, 2025, and the sound, the format’s popularity, and the creators’ current plans may have moved on since then.

If you are looking at the trend for your own reporting, treat it as a window into how some creators are framing adult life online, and check the current state of the format directly on the platform before making any claim about its reach.
