Paul Heyman turned on Brock Lesnar twice, and both times the interference cost Lesnar a WWE Championship. The first came at Survivor Series 2002, when Heyman helped Big Show take the title. The second came at Royal Rumble 2022, when Heyman handed Roman Reigns the belt that Reigns used to help Bobby Lashley pin Lesnar. WWE’s official recaps establish what Heyman did and whom he sided with. They do not give a confirmed private reason for either choice, so any motive beyond the on-screen events is interpretation, and this article labels it as such.

Survivor Series 2002: the first betrayal
What happened in the match
WWE’s official recap of Survivor Series 2002 describes Lesnar taking Big Show down and going for the pin. Heyman pulled the referee out of the ring, which left Lesnar’s pin attempt unsupervised and turned Heyman against his own client. Lesnar was distracted, Big Show delivered a chokeslam, and Big Show pinned him to win the WWE Championship. It was a title-costing betrayal carried out during the match itself, not a backstage angle.
How WWE frames it
WWE titles the event video as Heyman betraying Lesnar by helping Big Show, and it describes the match as the end of Lesnar’s undefeated streak. Those are WWE’s own framings, and the recap is the primary source for what happened in the ring. (WWE, Main Event: Survivor Series 2002)
Royal Rumble 2022: the second betrayal
The firing and the reunion that set it up
The second turn only makes sense against the storyline that preceded it. Reigns fired Heyman in December 2021. When Reigns could not compete at Day 1, Lesnar entered the WWE Championship Fatal 5-Way and won, and Heyman reunited with Lesnar, who was then working with Heyman as his advocate again. WWE’s account frames the Heyman–Lesnar partnership as the context for everything that followed. (WWE, WrestleMania 38 preview, January 31, 2022)

The title match
Lesnar defended the WWE Championship against Lashley at Royal Rumble 2022. According to WWE, Reigns appeared while the referee was down and speared Lesnar. Heyman then handed Reigns the championship belt, and Reigns used it to hit Lesnar. A new referee counted the pin for Lashley. The interference was therefore carried out by Heyman and Reigns together, and it decided the match.
The same night: Lesnar wins the Rumble
Lesnar still won the 30-man Royal Rumble match later that night. That result gave him the choice of WrestleMania opponent, so the loss to Lashley did not remove him from the WrestleMania picture. (WWE, Royal Rumble 2022)

Heyman returns to Reigns
WWE’s February 4, 2022 SmackDown recap says Heyman helped Reigns cost Lesnar the title and then left with Reigns, rejoining him on the show. That is the clearest official statement of where Heyman ended up after the second turn. (WWE, Paul Heyman rejoins Universal Champion Roman Reigns, February 4, 2022)
Why Heyman did it: what the record supports
What WWE establishes
WWE’s on-screen explanation for the 2022 turn is an alliance shift. Heyman returned to Reigns’s side, and that move makes the 2022 betrayal legible within the Reigns–Lesnar rivalry. WWE’s recaps do not provide a private motive for Heyman, and they do not say the same motive drove the 2002 turn. Anyone who states one underlying reason as confirmed fact is going beyond what the official record shows.

Reading the pattern (interpretation)
The two betrayals have a similar dramatic function: Heyman’s intervention costs Lesnar a championship. The immediate beneficiaries differ, though. In 2002 Big Show gained the title, while in 2022 Reigns and Lashley benefited from the chain of events. A reasonable reading is that the storyline used Heyman’s loyalty as the lever both times, and the 2022 version was tied to a broader shift in who Heyman was working for. That reading is an interpretation of the sequence WWE documents, not a statement WWE made about Heyman’s motives.
Background: Heyman as Lesnar’s advocate
WWE’s feature on how it signed Lesnar in 2002 quotes Heyman on Lesnar’s early workload: “Brock Lesnar should not be performing 300 days a year,” Heyman said of Lesnar’s first run in 2002–04. That quote shows how close the two men’s working relationship was during the period, but it is not an explanation of either betrayal. Watching the two turns
Both events are documented in WWE’s own archival pages, and the Survivor Series 2002 and Royal Rumble 2022 matches are the primary evidence for each turn. Availability of archival event video varies by region and can change, so check WWE’s site for current access before relying on a particular viewing route. Reading the match recaps alongside the video makes it easier to separate what happened on screen from the motive interpretations that fans and commentators add.
Profiles for both men are on WWE’s site as well: Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar.
