She has said she is not opposed to makeup. Her decision to go bare-faced at Paris Fashion Week in 2023 came while she was getting dressed, when she concluded that her face should not compete with the clothes. Across interviews reported from 2023 through late 2025, she has added several other reasons: the time a makeup session takes, the death of her longtime makeup artist Alexis Vogel in 2019, a broader idea of self-acceptance and aging, and a hope that younger women around her will feel more confident.
A choice, not a ban on makeup
The most accurate way to describe Anderson’s position is that she has chosen to go without makeup for specific occasions and periods, and she has been explicit that this is not a statement against cosmetics. In Vogue’s October 2023 interview, she said she had not planned to skip makeup at Paris Fashion Week and that she would rather spend the time seeing the city than sitting in a chair. Allure’s account of a preparation video from the same week also reported that she wore a tiny amount of mascara at the Vivienne Westwood show in Paris, so the look was minimal rather than strictly absent.
The reasons she has given
Anderson has not presented a single explanation. Each reason below comes from a different interview, and they overlap rather than replace one another.
Time in the makeup chair
The most practical reason is also the most direct. Speaking to Vogue, she said she would rather go for a walk and look at the architecture of Paris than sit in the makeup chair for three hours. Her point was about how she wanted to spend her time during a busy fashion week, not a judgement about makeup itself.

The death of Alexis Vogel
Vogel, Anderson’s longtime makeup artist, died in 2019. Anderson later told Elle, as quoted by ABC News, that without Vogel it was better for her not to wear makeup. This is her own explanation of how she felt afterward. It is not a claim that she was unable to wear makeup, and it does not account for every later appearance on its own.
Freedom, self-acceptance and aging
Anderson described going bare-faced as freeing, fun and a little rebellious, and told Allure, “I feel like it’s freedom, it’s a relief.” In her December 2023 interview with Vogue at the Fashion Awards, she called the period a self-acceptance time of her life and said she was doing it more for herself than for anyone else. She also described the change as peeling back the layers, which she framed as almost a fresh slate.

Hoping younger women feel confident
Anderson has tied her public appearance to the girls and young women in her family and social circle. Speaking to Vogue, she said, “I just thought, ‘I’m doing this for all the girls out there.'” In a later People interview, reported by The Daily Beast/Looker in December 2025, she said she wanted younger women around her to feel confident and to worry less about how they look.
Looking like her own photos
In that same People interview, as reported by The Daily Beast/Looker, Anderson said, “I look like my Instagram photos every day. That’s where it stemmed from.” This is the least elaborated of her reasons, and it points to a wish for her public image to match how she looks day to day.

The later reporting shows her explanation developing over time, but it has not turned into a permanent rule. Her statements describe choices made for particular events and periods.
Where the “she never wears makeup” version goes too far
- “Never” overstates the evidence. Anderson has said she is not opposed to makeup, and reporting of her Paris Fashion Week look includes a tiny amount of mascara.
- Her reasons are not an argument against makeup. She has not described cosmetics as harmful, shameful or incompatible with self-acceptance. She framed the choice as her own.
- Business ties do not reveal her motive. A 2024 Allure interview covers her entry into skincare through Sonsie Skin, and The Daily Beast/Looker reports that she and her sons acquired the brand in 2024. Allure’s writer speculates about whether celebrity publicity and commercial interests can coexist. That is the writer’s interpretation, not something Anderson herself has said about why she goes makeup-free.
Rosehip oil and her skincare routine
Vogue reported that Anderson wore homemade rosehip oil from her garden on her face during Paris Fashion Week. Allure’s account of the same preparation video describes homemade rose oil. The two outlets use slightly different names for the oil, and both describe it as homemade. Neither report presents it as a commercial product, a formula or a recommendation for readers.

What the record supports
The explanation that holds up across her statements is that Anderson has chosen to go makeup-free on certain occasions, for reasons that include practical time, grief over Vogel’s death, self-acceptance and a hope that younger women feel more confident in their own appearance. Her comments through December 2025 continue those themes. They do not establish that she has given up makeup permanently, and they do not show that her choice is a judgement about anyone else’s use of it.
